I'm in the market for a D-SLR and have narrowed my choices down to two...

The Nikon D5100 with a standard 18-55mm VR lens

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/764102-REG/Nikon_D_5100_Digital_SLR_Camera.html

or the Canon EOS Rebel T3i, with a 18-55mm ISII

Both get the same ratings/reviews on this site and others I've visited. Both shoot 1080P video while the Canon has 18MP max res and the Nikon has 16MP. Other stats seem to comparable.

I'm still a novice with photography so I welcome your opinions on the better camera in this price range.

Canon or Nikon deals with a particular style or preference. I suggest you frequent the Nikon users forum and the Canon users forum. See which group you relate to the most.

It basically depends on your personal needs. However, Canon is technically much better than Nikon and based on what you mentioned regarding their megapixels, having an 18MP DSLR would be much better in terms of the quality of the picture. But this is just my personal opinion.

If you are a costco member, they have the Canon T3i on sale for $879, with the 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses, 8GB SDHC card, rebel gadget bag, etc. Very good deal!

If you are willing to spend a little more money i would wait until the Nikon D7100 comes out and buy the Nikon D7000 when they reduce the price. The D7000 is probably the best amateur DSLR you can get.

my GF dumped me for a new nikon 7000. she loves it. she upgraded from a ?m80? nikon , and seems to think the 7000 is all that and a bag of chips and worth the hefty price tag.
