I am on AOL, if that makes a difference.

I got a message saying a certain file was corrupt and saying I should run a checkdisk utility.

What does that mean and...how do I access, process and run that utility?

It means Windows thinks there is an error on your hard drive and it wants try to detect the error and fix it.

Open Computer by clicking the Start button http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%20Vista/main/4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_47.png, and then clicking Computer.
Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%20Vista/main/18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_41.png If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.
To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.
To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
Click Start.

Maybe it's a USB problem or backup hard drive issue. If your main hard drive is in need of chkdsk, it would have run on startup.
