I am getting a loud static sound from my speakers with no programs playing music.

I logged off the puter and then back on to see if that would cure the prob and I could hear the same sounds as the puter was coming back on line!

Any suggestions for a cure?

Make sure it's not interference on the wires themselves. Often this can happen when the wire crosses an electrical wire. You can also take the jack and plug it into a radio (or your phone or whatever) to make sure it's not the speakers/wires themselves.

Interesting.

Now the speakers dont work but when I plug in my headphones they work perfectly.

have you checked the speaker connections? Sounds like a short somewhere.

Exactly what would I look for?

Only real possibilities are the connection from your audio card (or chip built-on the board), the wire itself, or the connection on the primary speaker (usually the single connection from the sound card into the left and then the right is connected through that). Only questions I'd have is "Is the sound coming from both speakers or only one of them?" and "Does the static/sound change when you jiggle the connection at the back of the speaker or the computer?"

As obob suggested, I'd replace the wire first (should be just a standard 1/8" plug) since that is the cheapest and easiest. I highly doubt it's the card itself if you're getting quality sound from the headphones. Might be the connection on the speaker side if the wire doesn't fix it.

Your speakers are haunted. Call a priest to perform an exorcism.
