A blogger I follow who covers the Twins and other stuff for Hard ball talk lost 150 pounds and wrote a little bit about it. This guy did it all on his own and used a very simple plan that worked for him. Good read if you are interested.

I never stopped drinking beer. Throughout my previous weight loss ups and downs I learned that the simple balance between calories consumed and calories burned is the driving force behind any lifestyle change and as a baseball stat-head the knowledge that things work on a linear scale was reassuring.
I like it!

What the ... ? It IS calories-in/calories-out ?!?!
Doesn't he realize that cutting his calories so will send him into starvation mode ?!?!?!

Imagine if he added some weight training in once a week
I can attest to his method of weight loss as well, although not nearly to that degree. Obviously calories in vs out is the biggest but you don't have to give up stuff you like, it's so much easier to keep track of your calories if you eat the same thing all the time, slipping up once leads to more slip ups and being fat sucks.

You're a man after my own heart. Calorie restriction beats restrained eating every time. Win every meal. Win every day. Eat the same few meals over and over again. Variety is grossly overrated.

Reading his article it seems that for him eating the stuff he likes is a slippery slope that led to overeating. And at least for him would lead him right back to obesity. Now I am a big proponent of not giving up the foods you like as I am the exact opposite, if I restrict myself from the things I like for too long I go on binges where I tear through it and any progress is lost. So, I prefer to use strategies that allow me to eat everything I like so long as I am reasonable about how much and how often.
Mentally this is much better to as I never feel bad about anything I eat.
