Miller 64 as negotiated with my doctor for barbecueing. Sol for beach days and wanna be at the beach days. Fort Collins Brewery Chocolate Stout (which is a poor substitute for Mackeson triple stout that i can't find anywhere now) for sipping on special occasions, and my favorite, chilling on the back deck when my dad comes to visit brew, Shiner Hefeweizen.

Galway is fantastic and gets overlooked too often in Ireland. We ate Oysters harvested from Galway Bay at Morans. There are blocks of pubs and restaurants with great seafood, beer and nightlife connected to Eyre Square. We had fish and chips there at McDonaghs that was made of the thickest and most moist cod I've ever had.
We were also told that the Guiness in the states is full of preservatives and doesn't taste the same. I couldn't get enough of Guiness in Ireland. Much more rich and great on the mouth.
I am so incredibly envious!

Drove to a street festival in Wicker Park late yesterday afternoon and found free parking right in front of Small Bar. Made the most of the opportunity by walking in and asking what special beers they had on tap. I was clear that I didn't want a special price. I wanted a special beer. The bartender recommended Firestone Wookie Jack, a black, imperial, rye IPA. Ordered that along with a glass of Templeton rye whiskey. Wow!

Had a Covington Strawberry last night. Much better than the celebrated Abita Stawberry. It is unfiltered and the classic, unique, LA strawberry taste, comes through strong.
The LA strawberry is a French strawberry, so it is unique. The best way of putting it is that it is kind of ugly looking, crinkly, but incredibly juicy. Not like the kind you buy in the grocery story that is perfect, beautiful, but not juicy at all. Thus, beer made with it is incredible, not like any other strawberry beer. Very unique and only LA.

Used to like Boddingtons before American Pale Ales were available. Now it's a little too low gravity for my tastes and I swear I can taste the preservatives. If I sat down at a pub in Manchester, it's probably the first thing I would order. English beers are for drinking in England.

Just got back from Austria and had a few good ones there. Some were sweeter than most I have had - I usually do not like "sweeter" beers at all but some of these were unexpectedly good. Zwettler Dunkels and Zwettler Radler (mix of beer and lemonade) were both good hot weather beers and were easy to put down a half liter at a time.

I remember drinking some very sweet dark beers in Austria. That's all I remember. I was 15. I believe I had my first Pilsner Urquel on that trip. Would they have been selling that in Austria in the early seventies?

Had a Paulaner hefewiezen w/some schnitzel on a train in Germany - a pretty good way to travel IMO. Most expensive beer on the menu was a Budweiser which I suppose makes sense given transportation costs.
The other beers I have sampled recently while on vacation that I remember are Hungarian pilsners that have been so-so (Soproni, Dreher).

Whole Foods has a very good craft beer selection and prices are comparable to Binny's, our local liquor store chain. The beverage manager at Whole Foods is very cool and has a lot of freedom to buy what his customers want. He will set aside rare offerings for customers with specific tastes and even give me a heads up when something good is coming in. Binny's is fine, but it's much further away and they close even earlier than Whole Foods.
I have Total Wine about 4 miles up the way. Awesome selection of beer and rum as well. The tienda across the street from on S Howard has an upstanding selection for a store it's size. I can get a sixer of Palm, Presidente or any offering Cigar City or Lagunitas has, pretty much. They don't carry Shiner anymore but pretty much have it all covered if in a pinch.

That's a long way to drive to get beer. I don't go more than a mile. Both Binny's and Whole Foods are about a mile away. I go to Whole Foods more because it's in the same strip center as Walgreens and Starbucks, and it's only a block away from Trader Joe's and my bank. It's also right by the train stop. The selection at WF isn't as big as Binny's, but it's very comprehensive. Price wise, it's almost identical to Binny's. Service wise, I get a little more personalized attention at WF. The beer buyer knows me and always points out new things that I might like. If something comes in that is going to go fast, he always sets some aside for me in the back. I almost never buy anything else at Whole Foods.
If I still lived in Tampa, I'd probably go to Total Wine. It's pretty far from where I lived, but it's in the corridor where I used to run a lot of errands. We lived right off the Hillsborough exit on the freeway and I drove my kids to preschool right off Bayshore, though I guess I wouldn't be doing that anymore since they just graduated from high school. I shopped at a Publix somewhere near Hyde Park. I had a lot more tolerance for driving distances back then. Everything is much closer together here.
You guys have no idea how good you have it with Publix. If they came to Illinois, they'd put the other two big chains out of business in no time.

Total Wine is for when I want to dig deep or get Presidente in the can for boating purpose. Also, I'll tie my rum run with it. Really, it is on my way to the gym and right around the corner from Cigar City so there's plenty of reason to go there. The Ranbow Mart across the street has excellent selection of craft and Belgians.
Yes, Publix rocks and I realize it every time I visit another city. Harris Teeter might be the only one that comes close.

Very cool. Haven't been to Fulton St. since right after they sold to AB. Used to go for their twice yearly dock parties, when they would release their new or seasonal beers. Would do a tour every time. They always had kegs tucked away upstairs that the other party-goers didn't know about. It's not the same since Greg left. Not sure how I feel about Honkers and their IPA being brewed alongside Budweiser. Never liked 312. On the upside, it's opened up a lot of capacity to keep making new beers. Speaking of which, King Henry is coming out pretty soon. Grab a few bombers if you see it anywhere. They sold out everything within a month last year.

Missed the fireworks tonight to make a Shiva call. This is the third one this summer and one of the most difficult, a mom with a 15 year-old daughter and an 18 year-old son whose husband died unexpectedly over the weekend. Had a little Sauvignon Blanc while I was there, but didn't get away before the grocery stores closed early for the holiday. Hit the local pub and had two 12 oz pours of Dogfish Head Burton Baton. Very good and very complex. I should look it up to see what they did with it. Tasted like some barrel aging.

Great brewery. They've got quite an expansion going on right now, setting up sales and distribution operations in larger cities around the US, plus a brewery and bottling plant somewhere in Europe. We couldn't even get them in Chicago until two or three years ago, now they've got as much shelf space as any crafter brewery in the country.

Is yuengling still not sold in Georgia? I did an internship in Brunswick several years ago. Went out drinking with some of my coworkers that first week at a place called wee pub and ordered a yuengling at the bar. It was one of those moments where it seems like the band stopped playing, the place went silent, and everyone turned to do a "you're not from here are you" stare. Yuengling seems to be everywhere, especially in the south. I go to a bar in Panama City when ever I'm home to visit family and that seems to be the only thing anyone is drinking. If I had to drink in Brunswick, I'd order a Founder's Pale Ale. They might look at you funny, but they'd pour the beer you ordered.

We got the Sierra Nevada/ Russian river collaboration in today; Brux domesticated wild ale. Can't wait to try it in a year :)

On the "When beer is mission critical" front, left my cell phone on the couch while I went to do some things in the kitchen. Came back and four a text from my wife. "ru coming?" I'm thinking "coming where?" Text before that said. "get kids 2 make dinner." By now I'm thinking she got tickets to something really good, like Goodman or the CSO. Then I finally got to the original text. "at rush er dtn. Ruled out heart attack." It wasn't Dogfish Head time yet. Jumped in the car and got downtown in 20 minutes. Hung with her in ER for an hour while they sorted out mysterious condition. They got blood, urine and finally gave her a morphine drip. It was time to check on the kids and figure out how to get her car back. Jumped back in the car, called her best friend to tell her I was picking her up so she could drive my wife's car back to our house. Picked up a 4-pack of DFH 90, went home, told the kids what was happening while I made them dinner. (So much for "get kids 2 make dinner.") Drank the first DFH 90 while I waited for Janet to get ready. Went on Web MD. Symptoms added up to a number of possibilities, including Pancreatic cancer. Drank another beer, got in the car, picked up Janet and went back to Rush Hospital. They'd run all the tests they could run, so they gave her some GI meds and released her. Got home with her about 1:30. Tucked her in, thought about drinking another DFH, but took a Xanax instead. Not much body to it, and the hops were nonexistent, but it did the trick.

No choice. I just ran out. Last time I stopped drinking, my wife agreed to double up on sex. I don't think that would be enough this time. In recent years, I've been drinking four to five nights a week and having sex twice a month. Maybe there's a connection there.

I knew someone would come along with such a kind offer. I'm going to hand them off to my some-time business partner tomorrow morning. We have a two hour kick-off meeting for a new project. It's going to be $40-50k between three of us and he brought the project in. I kind of owe him. Otherwise, I would ship it straight to you.

Been "sober" for over two weeks. Heard my daughter and my wife talking about my stash, the beers I've been aging in preparation for a big tasting I was going to host. They were going to give them to my wife's friend's husband, a seven figure a year Infectious disease specialist. They figure since he's Indian, he would like Indian Pale Ale. (What ignorant, racist bimbos) They figure since he's a rich doctor, he might know India Pale Ale and would drink all he wanted if it was actually something he liked. Vishnu can buy his own damn beer. These fine ales were set aside for discriminating customers like me who take the time to talk to the beer purchasing people and tell them what we're interested in. Vishnu couldn't give a crap about those guys unless they had syphilis, or some exotic variant. Worse still, he drinks Miller Lite with curry. Took matters into my own hands. Waited till everyone went to bed, then I drank both bottles of Devil Dancer. So I'm not sober for the moment, but Vishnu probably is. Just doing my part to balance the universe.
Vishnu is actually a pretty good guy, but he's not worthy of getting my beer for free. Plus he hates the Gators. On second thought, maybe he's not such a good guy. Maybe I should pee in the empty bottles and recap them.

Yeah there are many pumpkin ales, hard to say which one you had. Some are dessert like, real strong on the pumpkin and spices, some even with a graham cracker like edge. Others are more lager heavy, lighter on the flavors. I prefer the latter.

Jai Alai is an interesting IPA, in a good way. Very hoppy brew, comes strong with citrus hops at first, mainly grapefruit and orange. Caramel malts provide some balance. Towards the end, I can pick up some mango, light mango but it helps make it stand out compared to other IPAs. Finishes somewhat bitter. This is a strong IPA hopwise. Alcohol is hidden well. I like this one pretty well.

Three Philosophers - Quadruple ale to ponder your thoughts
Quadruple Ale
98% Ale – 2% Ale with Cherries Added.
Unique blend of Ommegang Quadruple ale and Liefmans Kriek. Three Philosophers was de for contemplation.
Brewmaster Phil's Tasting Notes
Three Philosophers is a unique blend of a Belgian-style strong dark ale and Liefmans Kriek, an authentic cherry ale from Belgium. Cherry chestnut in color, it's opaque but not cloudy with full carbonation topped by a smooth, tan head. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, molasses and brown sugar, dark fruits, brandied raisins and chocolate, Three Philosophers has notable sweetness with low hop bitterness. The mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish.
The strength and complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify.
Chef's tasting notes & recipes
When simply pairing this it is important to keep in mind that you need a dish that is going to stand up to the big alcohol, rich malt, and subtle cherry. Think hearty; stews, fatty meats, gooey, stinky cheese, and you cannot go wrong. Try this beer as a marinade or in a sauce. In a marinade, the alcohol naturally breaks down the proteins in the meat, tenderizing it, while the flavor of the beer is absorbed. For a sauce, simply reduce over low flame with some additional sour cherries, wait till half is reduced, season with salt, pepper and sugar plus a touch of cream and you are ready to go.

They only release 120 twice a year, but they shipped some two weeks ago. It's not your every occasion beer, but it's a good one for topping off a Double IPA tasting.
I've seen the 10th Anniversary Ruination. I'm still not drinking at the moment, but might pick up a bottle and hang on to it. Regular Ruination isn't very strong. I'd be interesting in seeing what they do to make it special.

I have to know the right people just to get it twice a year. I'm one of the lucky customers at both Binny's Beverages and Whole Foods who gets a shot at the beers that go straight in the back and never get displayed. So far this year I've gotten Boulevard's Rye on Rye, Founder's Devil Dancer and DFH 120 (twice) directly from the manager. I'm currently waiting on a bomber of Goose Island's King Henry barley wine. Probably best not to tell them that I'm on the wagon.

I buy lots of my beer at a local wine shop with an extremely limited, but high quality supply of beer. I'm basically their only regular beer drinking customer. They actually call me to come pick up some of the "non displayed" beers. I got a pretty good thing going.

So, they never run out of DFH 120? Most stores run out a week or two after they get their shipment and wait six months before they get their next one. You can't even get 120 at the brewery in Delaware unless it's just been released.
Burton Baton is awesome. They're brewing and shipping that year around now. The local brewpub gets it on tap every other month or so.

I stand corrected. DFH 120 is now brewed three times a year, February, June and October. They're probably trying to make up for the time that the entire batch got contaminated and they didn't ship any for almost a year. They lost a lot of 90 Minute IPA at the same time. They start brewing 120, 60 and 90 together, but separate them at those intervals.

She gets it and noone wants it, so I pick one up everyonce in awhile. I don't pay 9 bucks for a 12 oz beer often, and its not my favorite, but I bought one about 5 times this year since Jan.
That all being said, a couple of tap rooms here offer it daily on tap in 4 oz glasses. Do they ship kegs year round?

Drinking some Narragansett, old trusty from my days in Connecticut. I don't normally bother reviewing adjunct lagers, but this one is actually good enough to warrant it. Has the typical piss water look, but the smell is not off. Just corn, but no off smells. Tastewise, it's really good for what it is. Very smooth, very well balanced. There's actual sweet malts, and yes, some hops, that you can taste. Not much hops mind you, but enough to give it a nice edge. Finishes cleanly, with a good corn touch. Narragansett is like taking PBR and making it with more attention to detail. Glad I found this stuff down here.

Three Floyds is doing a lot of great stuff right now. Love Boulevard, but have not acquired a taste for Belgian sours. Sometimes I think Lagunitas creates new beers that aren't unique at all. It's just an excuse to use a cool name. The spice thing is getting out of control at DFH. I hear they do a great job with that, but it's not my thing.

They had some Allagash, but I've never tried any of theirs. Good stuff?

One of my good friends is from Maine so we drank a lot of it. Mainers are a prideful lot.
I liked the Allagash White which is probably their most popular. Haven't tried any of their specials or limited edition stuff.

I have distributed Dogfish Head for three years and have never seen the 120 IPA. The 90 IPA is our biggest seller. Grab as many 120 IPAs as you can.

Lagunitas Maximus. Great chit.
And a great value. Best DIPA six pack for the money anywhere. Costs less than a four pack of DFH 90.

The beverage guy at Whole Foods sets one aside for me each year. If I get to Binny's right after the come in, I can usually get the manager to go in the back and grab one for me.
This could be your year. Just looked on their web site and they are releasing three batches this year; February, June and October.
