Number on GC app icon

Sometimes the GC app icon on my iPhone has a number next to it. What does that mean?

more importantly, how do you make it go away....i've found no way to determine what they are notifying me of.

And why do i think that adding this post will add to my number...

It's under notification settings on the iPhone. Not sure where on Androids.

It usually refers to new private messages or new posts on threads you're subscribed to.
