One of the industies finest studios, GSC Game World, has closed down today.

A lot of you may not have ever even heard of them, but they developed a PC game called STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, followed by two more games, STALKER: Clear Skies and STALKER: Call of Pripyat. STALKER is considered by many one of the best PC games of the decade, I am one of the people that think this. STALKER was way ahead of it's time and scheduled to be released in 2004, going to head-to-head against fellow PC juggernauts Half-Life 2, Far Cry and Doom 3. STALKER then fell short of its 2004 release, being hit with delay after delay and even going into hibernation for a year and considered dead, until it was announced to come out in 2007, which it did. STALKER, despite the delays, was an excellent game upon release. It is a unique game, it's an open world action game with RPG elements.

With the closing of the studio, STALKER 2, which was announced last year, is now cancelled. Fortunately 4A Games, the studio that made the hit game Metro 2033 and is currently working on Metro: Last Light, consists of many former GSC Game World employees, so I hope eventually they may take the reigns and go create STALKER 2.

As someone who enjoys PC games mostly, this sucks. STALKER was a game that got me into PC gaming and into video games in general back when I didn't really care for games.

There are rumors this was Russian mob related.

Really? I've been hearing it was due to funding and such and not enough resources. But there is no clear answer for why they shut down yet, but that would be crazy if that has something to do with this.
