Will my son be able to play his PS2 games on a PS3? If so, which models would you suggest?

I don't think so. I believe they stopped making backward compatible ps3's. The original one (which I had) was backward compatible. I could be wrong though. Google backward compatible ps3 and see what pops up. I think some ps3's will actually play some ps2 games, but not all.
edit: Take a look here http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-80-GB-Backwards-Compatible/dp/B0011DNQLK/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1321387087&sr=1-1

4life is right, some of the first PS3s that came out did have backwards compatibility. The 80gb did but the 20gb didnt and I dont think any of the new models do.

I'm sure you could find a used one on ebay though.

I may be just talking out of my backside, but I believe the 60gig fatty PS3s were the only 100% backwards compatible units.

^^^That's the one I had. It also had 4 USB ports! Some POS broke into our house and stole it.

None of them were "100%" backward compatible.

The original 60GB and 20GB fatties actually were about 99%. They actually have PS2 hardware inside them and don't use software emulation.

98-99% sounds right
I had one until somebody broke in to my house and took it. Had to replace it with a newer one.

I had the old fatty 60g, it played all of my old PS2 games.
It ended up getting the YLOD. A friend wanted to buy it from me anyways because he said it was the only one that could play all of the old PS2 games. He thought he could fix it.
99% is close enough to 100% for me lol.
