View Full Version : Ad on the side of the page!

Today I started getting an ad on the side of the page when I browse the forums. Is anyone else seeing this? I've tried different browsers but it still shows up. It's aggravating because it throws the page off center.

Complete crap. I don't click on any of them unless by accident, then I mumble under my breathe and either close that tab or hit the back button. .... Would GC please listen to their customers and stop with all the ads? They aren't worth it. I'd rather spend an extra $2 - $3 a month than have to put up with all the ads. I'd also rather have GC put special ad threads in each conference high-lighting their true business partners. (i.e. an ad for a Jacksonville restaurant who is offering a game day special for the upcoming Florida-Georgia game in the Insider Forum). I think this would drive business to your partners who would benefit from it and hence make them willing to pay more for the ads. Plus your GC subscribers would benefit from it b/c that's where they are headed this weekend (i.e. Jax) and knowing they can get a special somewhere might entice them to frequent that business now and possibly in the future.

If you're interested in trying it, I wrote a quick-and-dirty Firefox plugin that reformats GC pages ... when used in conjunction with adblock, it removes all ads and utilizes the full width of your browser, and also removes a lot of the space at the top of the page. I've been using it for a few days now and minus a quirk on the viewing user profiles and that it doesn't clear quickreply boxes, it's pretty solid for only having invested about 10 minutes into it.

After:
http://i52.tinypic.com/2dinfgz.png (http://i53.tinypic.com/15ov4g3.jpg)
Up until yesterday I was fine with just running Adblock (as I'm sure many registered users here are, too). But adding a table column crushed most of the real estate here - I'm still not seeing the ad, of course, but I just have a big blank column.
So I whipped up this firefox extension, which I'll make public after a few modifications. I've been using it since yesterday when the change happened and it's vastly improved my experience here.
I didn't do much else to it, but in case someone's interested in trying it out:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H01DA416
Open that with Firefox and it should ask you if you want to install. Just accept and visit GC. You shouldn't have to restart browser.
If it says it cannot open the file, just save it and drag it into Firefox.
If you don't like it, you can disable by going to Tools->Addons and disabling Gatorcountry Format

The problem on the iPad is that it shrinks the font enough to make it uncomfortable to read. I know I could use the iPad app, but I like to see all the content of the web version. Unfortunately this makes it a pain to read the site on iPad. It's not an issue on my desktop since we have a wide screen and the adds just show up in the empty space beside the page.
While I understand the revenue issue, elimination of certain types of particularly annoying ads for premium members would be worthwhile.

This problem is being strongly ignored. Today the ad space doubled in size to about 20% of my screen width further shrinking my Gatorcountry screen. Why should I bother with GC when I can only read ads for my subscription cost? Plus I now need a magnifying glass to read the site. In addition the extra space taken up today is empty. The ads only take up half the width of the newly wide space.
Of course it appears this thread was moved to reduce attention from too many people. At least that's how it seems with no adequate responses. I figure soon enough the thread will be deleted. I'm not getting a very good feel about customer focus based on this issue.

Guys, we have a new ad provider that wants to trial those ads on the side of the forums. We are seeing how it goes. I'm not sure i like ads on the side either but we also have to balance that with necessary ad revenue. I will be keeping an eye on this, thanks for letting me know.

P.S. Threads like this and other customer related things are moved here because the forums average nearly 4,000 posts a DAY so it's impossible to monitor them all. This forum is exclusively for this sort of thing and makes it easier to bring attention to us.
Thanks!

MJGator8104
11-29-2011, 10:16 PM
Well thanks for monitoring, but how can you explain double width ad space, but using only half the width with ads? Plus the targeted ads are worthless. For the first month or so I got only an ad for Toyota. Ive never owned, shopped for, or even driven a Toyota. If this is targeted ads, you're being royally screwed for whatever you are paying the ad company.
Now go get or borrow an iPad. Turn it sideways (landscape). Now go to the forums through the GC web site, not the iPad app. Truthfully tell me if you can read this comfortably without glasses or a magnifying glass.
Guess I'll give in and use the app. Then I'll never see those ads. Was that the intent? I doubt it, but it sure as heck is the result. So tell Toyota and Progress Energy ( I live in Nevada for Pete's sake, not Florida) I won't see their stupid ads again.
Suggestion, I would rather see ads between posts then the side stuff. However,I'm really disappointed that the VIP price doesn't get you something relative to ads. Apparently others also don't see the value of paying based on other posts.
Solari
11-29-2011, 10:22 PM
I understand that, that's why this is a trial. The app is much better tho and quicker, I use it all the time. I'd like to see if there's a way to not show those to subscribers tho, so that's something to work out.

You can absolutely show those conditionally to subscribers and non-subscribers. Would be a pretty trivial change to the template & probably a single included php file.

Yeah, it's as simple as running a logged-in, subscriber variable check.
Solari
11-30-2011, 10:44 AM
It's not as simple as you think because we're using a custom template and the ads are supposedly displayed outside of the variables because of having to use a table structure to get the ads to display in the first place. I'll get it figured out though like I usually do. ;)
Ray

VB templates - custom or not - are pretty easy to inject modified variables into.
I'd recommend a collapsable div instead of a table since a lot of people run adblock anyway ... if there's no ad, they might as well get the space back

many more than two. I thought GC had gotten the message that we pay for a subscription to avoid that nonsense but apparently they haven't. from what I can tell, the ads are what makes it harder for the whole thing to load up and I have to refresh multiple times sometimes. frustrating. It is truly sad that they refuse to listen. I guess they will have to lose more subscribers and get more ads that less people will see. for me, if any advertisers care, I refuse to patronize your business if you advertise here so you cost yourself business.

Just a side note to iPad users, as I am one, you can stretch the screen and gain the size back. I know it's not as good but it does gain the font size back and gets rid of the Ad.

This is the third thread complaining about this in a month. Basic response is we need the money and we're trying out everything that might help. I guess the ads won't go away until enough paying subscribers leave to clearly demonstrate how bad an idea this was for the paying subscribers. I finally had to quit looking at the GC web site on my ipad and use the GC App, even though I don't like the layout as much. Plus the supposedly "targeted" ads on the side of the page clearly have nothing to do with your personal web history based on my experience (Toyota?) and many others. Here's the thing.......
Why should you "have" to try loading a new browser with Ad Block? Why should you "have" to do anything to get rid of this garbage?
By the way, the Ad/Flash block are apps that are added to google chrome and you do not install them to your computer.
I understand what you're saying but Google Chrome is better and Ad/Flash block is good to have, not just for Gatorcountry. Google chrome is a much faster browser so I would tell you to get rid of whatever browser you use and get used to chrome.

Sorry Ray - it's not you I know......but whomever is "listening" to your requests to get rid of this garbage is ignoring you - terrible response time - you need a new person apparently to get rid of this.
Every page loads slowly, and that f***ing ad and audio still pops up.
Please stop the madness! I can't enjoy the site like I want to.
Is anyone else getiing slow load time for every page, even on the same thread? Terrible.

the video ad is still there as is another ad making the whole page justify left. Is it GC's intent to continue to sell and run advertising on the premium pages?
if your tech people are not responding or are incapable of fixing the problem, you should repalce them with somebody that values your business unless you do not value ours.

It's not just the video or sound ads, it's all the ads in general. They push the page over and make the whole experience awful. Between this and the whole magazine issue that's still not corrected I've decided to drop my subscription.

Since you have only responded to the "auto playing " issue, I assume that there is no chance the annoying ads will be removed for paying subscribers? If you read the posts, the complaints are as much about the presence of the ads as anything, but I see no response to whether paying subscribers will have to continue with this issue.
If you're definitely not going to get rid of the right-side ads then just tell us, and I'll go away. You've already successfully forced me to stop using the web version of the site on my iPad. So now I don't even see the ads at the top of the page. Do the advertisers at the top of the page appreciate that they're losing attention because of the advertisers on the right side of the page?
Frankly I'm getting tired of this rant. Just put all the ads you want anywhere and I'll get my gator info wherever I can find it in a legible font size.

MJ, I've said a few times here that we are working on a way to not show these to subscribers. In the meantime all I do is can offer is my apologies and ask for your patience.
UFGATOR, did you contact our customer service about the mag issues? We have been putting them out consistently since this fall with a new reliable partner so pls contact us so we can see what is wrong.
Thanks!

Why don't you just move the Ad inline and above or below the forums. Obviously, there are a lot of subscribers who don't like this, so where's the loyalty to your subscribers?
Move it, please!

That's what we want to do and I'm waiting to hear back from a tech who can help us with this but he's been out of the loop so I may have to find someone else.
Can you use our app in the meantime? It's what I use on my iPad.

Ahh, I missed this response. I might have overlooked it when some threads were merged and I just went to the end.

What do you mean by worse? The issue we're trying to solve is the forums being centered and the ad forcing people on mobile devices to see a ton of white space. This should keep forum totally expanded and centered on mobile devices.
Also, if you're using ad block, the issue with the space at the top of the page completely disappears. Which is much, much better than before.
Please respond with as much info as possible (what you're viewing on, how it's worse, etc.).

add me as one that is extremely disappointed in management decision that ad revenue is more important than subscriber customer satisfaction. could very well end up being a penny wise, pound foolish decision
if any advertisors read this, please be assured that I will go out of my way to make sure that you never get a penny of business from me or mine so by weasling your way into a premium site, you have cost yourself the opportunity to get any of my business.

You'll notice that every site, bar none (including our own competition) has ads even for subscribers. It's just the way it is and we have to take advantage of every revenue stream possible to stay healthy and keep growing. We do get substantial amount of revenue from advertisements.
I know we can't make everyone happy this way, but at least we're actively trying to find a way to minimize the impact of them.

TG, I commented on the thread in the Den, but here's my comment in case you missed that one..
On my computer, it appears better. Width is again centered and I'm able to scroll down past the add pretty quickly with my thumbwheel. I haven't had any luck getting adblock to work on these so I gave up.
On my ipad, it's no better. Still left justified with white space on the right, but no ad in the white space. The ad, however, is at the top of the thread so for the ipad it's worst of both worlds since the actual thread is still narrower giving smaller fonts throughout.
I'll be sticking to the ipad app for now. I am getting more used to using it.

Nope didn't work. Still empty white space on the right side and the big ad at the top. Just like the screen capture from the last poster. Actually it seems he still has the ad. I just have white space on the right side.
