View Full Version : Yellow Light of Death (PS3)

I just got the yellow light of death tonight.
I know there's several PS3 owners on here. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with the YLOD?
I really don't want to buy a new one. And from what I've heard, it's pretty pricey to send it back in ($140). I really don't want to pay 140 dollars for a repair or refurbish either. However, I have invested a lot in games and peripherals, so I have to do something.
I watched a few tutorials online about possibly fixing it at home. It doesn't seem too difficult. But knowing me, I would end up doing irrepairable damage.
In the end though, it seems like I may have to buy a new one. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas that could save me unneccessary spending?

Game Stop will give you about a $100 on a trade even if it is not working which is what I did when I got the yellow light of death. To me it made the $140 for a refurb not worth it

or call sony, they repair it for 50 bucks or something like that usually.

I believe if the console is older than a year old, they charge you $140 for a repair. I don't know this a fact, but this is what I've been told. I suppose I could actually call and find out first hand.

A little more info if you don't mind?
Was your PS3 a slim or a fatty?
Was it the backwards compatable PS3?
What size HDD did it have?
Did you tell them that you got the YLOD, or did you omit that part (I think they test it anyways)?
How long ago did you do this trade in?
If I could get about a $100 off of a brand new PS3 by trading in my old one, I would jump all over that in a heartbeat.

Wow, so I called gamestop, and you weren't lying. When she asked what kind it was, I told her it was the old 60 gig fat unit that is backwards compatable, and she said in a trade in I could get about $100 off.

i traded my big old one in and got a slim and paid nothing pretty much.

After refurb cost, gamestop was going to end up giving me $80 trade in, so instead I sold it to my friend for $100, who is going to get a friend of his to fix it for him. I just bought a new one.

mine has been acting weird.
black ops does not start on mine, and just freezes up with it in. The system does not shut off, but it freezes and must eject or turn off the whole system.
Friend said it is call of duty that is messing mine up guess a lot of people are dealing with it.

I had the same PS3 as you did...doesn't make sense to send to Sony when you can get $80-$100 for the old one.

I was going to start a thread and saw this post...
I have the old 60G with backwards compatibility.
I'm pretty disappointed because I realize I'm going to lose all the stuff that was saved on my PS3. Just a couple games but it still sucks.

I don't know what to do so I guess I just have to go with Gamestop and trade it in.

I never got the yellow light but I did have a problem where my disc drive stopped working and I sent it back to sony to be fixed. It was worth it for me and certainly wouldn't hurt to look into.

Weird, Frank, mine died last week too. I had the original launch day 40GB. Just bit the bullet and bought a new one. Lost about 30 hours of a skyrim character though, which bums me out.

You should try to put it up on craigslist and see if you get a bite. Its a very sought after unit, even if it has the ylod.

Also, take the time to call Sony, see what options they might give you.

Lastly, you could try to fix it yourself. its not necessarily hard, just tedious and time consuming. There's a bunch of tutorials online (YouTube). However, neither Gamestop nor Sony will take it off your hands if you take that route.

I did this with my xbox and it worked for about a month longer then I just bought a new one. It was fun messing around with it though. So there's that.
