Saw Dinosaur Jr. last night. Heard the first three songs and walked out. Just wasn't in the mood and I guess I'm not a fan. It was just five bucks admission to a street festival and I'd been there for three hours. Going back this evening to hear the Raveonettes. Bringing my dog. She's really into girly rock.

Went back to see the Ravonettes last night on the same stage where Dinosaur Jr. played. Great set and a great setting, under the El tracks on Damen Ave. with storm clouds blowing in from the lake.

Gator Country
Well, I've been to Alabama, people - ain't a whole lot to see
Skynyrd says it's a real sweet home, but it ain't nothin' to me
Charlie Daniels will tell you the good Lord lives in Tennessee
I'm goin' back to the Gator Country where the wine and the women are free
There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name (and he says...)
Come on, boy, you better make it back home, again
Many roads I've travelled - they all kinda look the same
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he's calling my name
Old Richard Betts will tell you, Lord, he was born a Ramblin' Man
Well, he can ramble on back to Georgia and I won't give a damn
Elvin Bishop out struttin' his stuff with little Miss Slick Titty Boom
I'm goin' back to the Gator Country and get me some elbow room
There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name (and he says...)
Come on, boy, you better make it back home, again
Many roads I've travelled - they all kinda look the same
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he's calling my name
There's Marshall Tucker ridin' the rainbow, searchin' for a pot of gold
They can take the highway, baby - take all they can hold
The Outlaws down in Tampa town is a mighty fine place to be
They got green grass and they got high tides, and it sure looks good to me
There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name (and he says...)
Come on, boy, you better make it back home, again
Many roads I've travelled - they all kinda look the same
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he's calling my name
Oh, Gator Country
Little of that chomp, chomp

Great review on the Av Club. Very intrigued, but not sure I'm ready for a Rush reunion.
Meanwhile, this Smashing Pumpkins debut is awesome. Really insightful, even vulnerable commentary from band members about each song. I would have expected at this point that this was totally Billy's band, but every member of the band is on air and this was a very collaborative project. Not only do the other member bring their talent but they insert pieces of their own narrative. In this show, Billy has given everyone s chance to provide their two cents. This sounds as much like a band of soul mates as the original band was in the early nineties.
Hard to call the upcoming Rush tour a reunion. They tour regularly and still release new material periodically. I last saw them in March 2011 at Madison Square Gardens and they were ferocious. 3 hour show and it was the best I'd seen them. Then again, have you ever heard of a poor Rush performance? I will be there when they come to Tampa in November.
Agreed on the new Pumpkins and thought you'd like it. I have listened to that album continuously for the last week, can't put it down. I am looking forward to hearing Quasar live. That tune will blow the roof off for sure.

Next, I highly recommend the new Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to it twice tonight and it is fantastic. Might be Corgan's finest work. It really is that good. I am thrilled because his music left me around Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness.
I will have to check that out. Gish was one of my favorite albums of the 90's, Siamese Dream was very good - then after that I dunno what happened, but things went south fast.

Will be hearing a butt load of live music this weekend, starting Thursday night with Calexico and Death Cab for Cutie in Grant Park. Friday is the first day of the "Hipster High Holidays" aka Pitchfork Music Festival. Feist, Purity Ring, Dirty Projectors, A$AP Rocky, Japandroids and Willis Earl Beal are the bigger names on Friday. Saturday's lineup features Sleigh Bells, Wild Flag, Cults, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Atlas Sound, Cloud Nothings and Grimes. (been digging her lately) Sunday is a bit of a letdown, but Beach House, The Men, Kendrick Lamar, Iceage and Unknown Mortal Orchestra should be good. Vampire Weekend is the headliner, but I'm not a big fan.
Here's Grimes' dance hit Oblivion. She's blowing up all over the world now.

Glad I'm hearing them early. That should stick to my palette better than the bands I hear from late Friday on. Heard them at Lolla five years ago and couldn't remember a thing about the set a week later.
Hear about the Lolla after party Saturday at the Aragon? Franz Ferdinand and Jane are playing for just $15. I'm guessing you had heard. You're probably on the guest list. I'm thinking about driving up there from Oak Park. My daughter will be heading up from the festival on the Red Line, which means I'll be driving home with a car load of 18 year-old girls babbling about who played the most awesome set that day.

See the Bloc Party set (blow off the Chile Peppers), then hike over to the Roosevelt Red Line stop. Not nearly as big a crowd as there will be on the stops further to the north. If you beat the crowd, it will be a very nice ride to uptown. You get off less than a block from the entrance to the Aragon. Just make sure you have your CTA cards charged up. There will be long lines to the machines where you buy or charge up your cards. You should probably buy three day cards when you hit town, then you won't have to charge them up again. You get as many rides as you want for the whole weekend.

If you're going, I'll definitely go. I've hit the wall with concert ticket expenditures this year, but I can swing another $15 to hand with some Gators. It's 18+ so both my kids and their friends will be there. That'll be weird. First time I went to the Aragon, I was probably hitting on girls my daughter's age.

Been reading some very positive reviews. I'm very fond of this band and how they made it where they are.
Was a huge fan of the Duke and Vig's early bands Spooner and Fire Town throughout the eighties and the nineties. Used to see Spooner in Chicago every time they came to town. Even traveled up to Madison to see them play in front of a home crowd. It just pained me to see such talented musicians work so hard for so little. These guys were great producers and they saw how many bands with lesser chops than them were hitting it big with female lead singers and more dance hook based music. They went to Europe and hired Shirley Manson, then these aging cornbelt rockers become vocal driven Eurotrash hit makers. I wonder if their early fans in those Milwaukee biker bars even speak to them anymore.
Anybody who really likes this band should pick up an old Spooner or Firetown disc if you can find it. Or maybe you can just download a couple of singles. Tomorrow Never Comes by Spooner and The Good Life by Firetown were legitimate college radio hits in the last eighties. They were more in the realm of Whiskeytown or Uncle Tupelo.
i love 'em. and out of their five albums, this is now my favorite. absolutely. and it was a two way tie between their debut, and version 2.0. i can't stop playing it!

The man could play harmonica, guitar, and I've never seen a faster fiddle player in my life. He lost his home in 2005 to Hurricane Katrina and passed away just a couple of weeks later. He was probably 80 in this video with Santana at Montreux 2004.
This is music with style.

I am always looking for new artists and new music to listen to. Who really gets your day started right now? What kind of music are you digging right now? If you are like me, my mood determines my music.
Today I am listening to a little of the following:
Ray Lamontagne - Let It Be Me
Adele - Rolling in the Deep
Band of Horses - Blue Beard
Let me know, I am always looking for new stuff, old, current, it doesn't matter.
if this is the stuff you like, wake yourself up from your pleasant nap with a little English rock!! if you're not ready for wacky stuff, try the Kooks...super fun easy stuff to listen to!

What a summer of live music you've had.
X has been touring quietly for a few years with most if not all the original band members. They've been playing smaller venues in large cities. Not sure where everyone is living, but Exene had moved to the St. Louis area some time while I was there. Heard her in a radio interview once. Her accent was very familiar. Looked up her bio and saw that she's from Tallahassee. Have never seen them live. That would be a treat.

Yea great summer.
Don't really know many X songs but I know of them. John Doe more from acting than music though. If I see them ill have to break away from my group who will either be at Drake or Afrojack.
The venue is seriously strange. They basically cut Philadelphia in half to put the main stage on the famous rocky steps. Plus there is a freaking statue right in the middle of the main crowd area.

I am listening to thaf right now as well.
The tour is getting great reviews and I regret not seeing them in early Nov here in Florida. Work travel is kicking my ass these days and didnt have it in me. Blew off Neil Young while in Philly last night so that really says something.

He tweeted something about not seeing you in the audience. I think you really hurt his feelings.

Can't think about the Who without thinking about the immortal Keith Moon. Here's a heartfelt Roger Daltrey performance of this brilliant, obscure rick anthem that John Parr wrote for his hero and asked Roger to record. This is a drummer's wet dream, a sequential solo featuring Martin Chambers, Roger Taylor, the late Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer, Mark Brzeziki, Stewart Copeland and Zac Starkey.
Behold the percussive majesty of Under a Raging Moon.

I would have loved to have been able to see The Who in 1973. Keith Moon is my favorite drummer and probably my favorite rock character. Constantly looking for video of him busting up the skins.

Saw the Who in Jax with Black Oak Arkansas and Patti Labelle.
Saw them the next time without Moon. A new drummer, background singers, keyboards, and they still couldn't fill in the sound they once got with 3 playing.
The last time Entwistle played for them was at the concert for the NY police and firemen. Zac played drums and they sounded more like themselves than any other version since Moon passed. Then JE died in Vegas and that tour and the real Who sound, died also.

A little 80s cowpunk nostalgia and a very crude, ironic music video from Athens/Marietta based Guadalcanal Diary. Not very well produced or recorded, but on the heals of well produced, ADHD poster child and artistically bankrupt Sammy Hagar, a breath of underproduced fresh air. Murray Attaway is twice the artist Sammy every thought he was, and probably drives safer.

Guadalcanal Diary with a decent contract, better music video production and better studio chops. Never understood why this band didn't hit it big.

Saw those guys at London Victory Club in downtown Tampa back in the 80's. I agree with you, no idea why they didn't make it. Great sound and great live. I know they got lumped in to the whole Athens scene but they actually were an Atlanta band. My guess they just got grossly overshadowed by REM and they probably didn't have good management. I could easily see a record company telling them to make REM music and that wasn't Guadalcanal's sound.

I think they're back at it again, as are the dB's. Maybe the disappearance of REM will bring some of their great contemporaries back to the scene. The dB's recent album is surprisingly good.

I recall seeing something about the dB's recently but never really listened to them back in the day. I saw Guadalcanal Diary after 2x4 was released. After their show, I ended up having a conversation with them and they were the nicest bunch of folks but I could tell they were a little frustrated being overshadowed by their friends REM. I felt bad for them so I helped them load their van as they had to do that themselves. It was late and they had a long drive to the next gig in Birmingham. Life on the road can be very tough.
