When Giants walked the earth…
Lost in the dense and endless genius of Johnny Cash's collaborations with Rick Rubin are a few brilliant duets.
Here's Johnny with Joe Strummer, covering Bob Marley's Redemption Song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGVSTsgcCvw
This is the most poignant recordings Johnny ever made, a duet with Nick Cave.

Unless it was Johnny singing Nick Cave's stirring Mercy Seat by himself.

Even if we're tired of old Johnny Cash, we need to expose our children and our grandchildren to the one of the greatest musical and poetic giants of our age.

I do the same....never miss them if them are in the area. I am a huge David Lowery fan. He's one of the coolest and smartest frontmen in rock history, IMO. He usually hangs around after concerts if anyone wants to chat with him. Some call him the "father of indie", because he rejected the commercial "hair band" sound of the 80s to do something cool and unique. Cracker was iconic in the mid-90s, with "Low" and "Eurotrash Girl". CVB and Cracker members are almost interchangable now, and normally are co-billed.
They just finished a "camp in" in Atlanta (linked below).

Lowery has to be one of the most musically and lyrically literate artists in the world. Love the span of genres he covers, mixing punk with Balkan folk and cabaret. He was brilliant to create both bands the way he did. Spent a decade building a cult following for CVB, then paved the way for wider popularity with Cracker, while CVB fans held their torches for a reunion, then bring back CVB back in '02 and letting both bands tour together. Best I remember from the last show I saw, Lowery and the drummer are the only people who play in both bands, but the only person who seems absolutely essential to Cracker is the other lead guitar player and vocalist. Don't remember his name, but he is quite the showman alongside Lowery.

That and the syncopated groove from Moral Kiosk. Biggest difference is that you can actually understand the lyrics. In the early 80s, The Clash was the "only band that mattered. REM was the "only band that muttered."

You're thinking of Johnny Hickman. He's an excellent songwriter and wrote "Mr. Wrong" for Cracker. A local indie musician told me that he thought it was the greatest country song he'd ever heard.

Jeff is a weird bird and a very timid person off stage. Jay is a bully. The two of them go back a long way and it was a very dysfunctional relationship. Jeff needed to get out of St. Louis (Belleville actually) and away from Jay to thrive. Jay may be brilliant, but he's irrelevant because he does not play well with others. If he did, he'd have a band full of brilliant musicians and collaborators.

Doesn't get any better than DBT. Best way to describe them is two incredibly smart and musically gifted redneck hippies (Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood) who alternately write and perform either cool idie, classic country (as good as you'll hear these days) or rock songs with guitar rifts that Jimmy Page would be proud of.

Like it of not, Uncle Tupelo's sound was predominantly Jay Farrar and his brilliant songwriting. Jeff is a showman who is good at promoting his band, Jay an odd introvert.
Jeff is good at a lot of other things, including songwriting, though he's more of a collaborative songwriter. He did a great job putting his band together. It's easy to promote a band when you fill it with world class musicians. Jeff was a pioneer in building an online community around music. In person, he's probably just as introverted as Jay. He's very uncomfortable in public unless he's on stage. He can barely look at you when he talks.
I'm surprised to hear that Jay was not good in concert. I heard Son Volt about four years ago at a street festival and they were incredible. Wilco songs have always had to grow on me. Almost every song Son Volt did in that show hit me immediately.
Jay isn't a showman, but Jeff isn't either in the true sense. He's just very affable when he's on stage. When I saw him at Lolla, he told the audience about waking up that morning with a huge zit, then he made the camera operator zoom in on his forehead. Next thing I know, his zit is thirty feet wide on the jumbotron. The crowd loved it.

I've seen Son Volt live and Farrar live. The shows are not even close. Son Volt was much, much better. Farrar just doesn't seem to have the needed presence, at least to me, on stage.
Son Volt was a fantastic band. Wilco, IMHO, was a fantastic band through Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, then got too experimental and really left their roots and foundation.
But neither came close to the combination of Uncle Tupelo. Not even close.

He was the headliner. I remember reading about that. I used to love that little festival. First time I saw Alejandro live was at a big festival in St. Pete that featured only Texas artists. I think it was in the spring of 98, right before we moved back to the midwest. Probably seen him 12 or 15 times since then. He actually recognizes us at the shows now.

Radiohead is playing Sunday night. There are still tickets around. I've got tons of family coming in for my kids graduation though. Don't see how I can swing it.
Late that night, the Dandy Warhols are playing at Metro. That's not until about 10. Might be able to do that one. It's 18+ so I could take my new minted grads with me.

Great time last night. They changed up the stages a little bit so that at all times there was a different style of electronic music going on for everyone. The VIP and bathroom situation though was terrible.
Avicii is playing tonight. I have only seen him once at a club so this will be a lot different than that.

Got the new Beach House CD Bloom from my kids for Father's Day. Perfect music for a lazy summer day. Can't really categorize this band. They've been labeled "Dream Pop" by the industry. I guess that works, but it sounds too much like industry jargon. It's light electronic pop that's upbeat without being uptempo. Kind of ethereal and uplifting. What the hell, I'll just call it Dream Pop.

It's a mid 1990's or early 2000's country song that sounds exactly like that... It's driving me crazy because I can't think of the name. It's a descending major scale with a simple standard progression: I - V - IV - I - IV - I - V - I
Or more precisely: G - D/F# - C/E - G/D - C - G/B - D/A - G
There are thousands of tunes that use this progression or some variation of it. The descending bass line is standard. Unfortunately, I do not know the song you are referring to.

the new 'Garbage' disc. Love it!!!
Been reading some very positive reviews. I'm very fond of this band and how they made it where they are.
Was a huge fan of the Duke and Vig's early bands Spooner and Fire Town throughout the eighties and the nineties. Used to see Spooner in Chicago every time they came to town. Even traveled up to Madison to see them play in front of a home crowd. It just pained me to see such talented musicians work so hard for so little. These guys were great producers and they saw how many bands with lesser chops than them were hitting it big with female lead singers and more dance hook based music. They went to Europe and hired Shirley Manson, then these aging cornbelt rockers become vocal driven Eurotrash hit makers. I wonder if their early fans in those Milwaukee biker bars even speak to them anymore.
Anybody who really likes this band should pick up an old Spooner or Firetown disc if you can find it. Or maybe you can just download a couple of singles. Tomorrow Never Comes by Spooner and The Good Life by Firetown were legitimate college radio hits in the last eighties. They were more in the realm of Whiskeytown or Uncle Tupelo.

Saw them live at Lolla three years ago. Okay set. Excellent fidelity live, but they didn't have a lot of strong material at that point. They had all the look of a one hit wonder. It was unfortunate for them that my daughter and I had just seen one of the best sets of the festival by The Kaiser Chiefs.
I always thought the Silver Sun Pickups' lead vocalist was female. (Is it just me?) I'm watching them play but the chick wasn't singing. What I always thought was a female voice is coming out of this very male bass player. It was like the girl was a ventriloquist.
Just starting to hear their new stuff on the radio. Strong followup.

Let me revise my recollection. I just heard Panic Switch on the radio on my way home from the gym (and then liquor story). Now I remember what a riveting performance that was. The rest of the show was a tepid warm up for that song.
Gotta go. The Smashing Pumpkins thing is about to start.

Great review on the Av Club. Very intrigued, but not sure I'm ready for a Rush reunion.
Meanwhile, this Smashing Pumpkins debut is awesome. Really insightful, even vulnerable commentary from band members about each song. I would have expected at this point that this was totally Billy's band, but every member of the band is on air and this was a very collaborative project. Not only do the other member bring their talent but they insert pieces of their own narrative. In this show, Billy has given everyone s chance to provide their two cents. This sounds as much like a band of soul mates as the original band was in the early nineties.
