Women’s tennis wins 8 out of 9 matches

 |  September 22, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Florida womens tennis team earned victories in eight of nine matches during the second day of play at the Gator Fall Classic held at the Ring Tennis Complex.

Florida squared off against North Florida in singles competition and swept all six matches in straight sets, while taking two of three doubles matches against FIU.

Overall, we looked good in singles. Obviously, were not as sharp as we can be with this being just our second day of competition, but I think were moving well and we look tougher than we did at this time last year, head coach Roland Thornqvist said. We seem to be handling the ups and downs during a match better.

Senior Whitney Benik collected her first singles victory of the season, dominating Vanessa Sanchez 6-0, 6-1.

Ive been have playing really well in practice and today it showed, Benik shared. I felt like I couldnt miss out there.

Whitneys play was a highlight today, Thornqvist said. Shes always been a tough dual-match player for us, but it really looks like shes on-pace to have a better fall (when individual tournaments are played) than shes ever had.

Also earning wins on the singles court was Diana Srebrovic, Csilla Borsanyi, Megan Alexander, Anastasia Revzina and Lolita Frangulyan.

The final day of the event gets underway on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free.

Srebrovic fought off one set point in the second to capture her 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) win against Natalia Sanchez. Frangulyan also was forced to dig deep, as she rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set, down two breaks before producing a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 victory over Carolina de Melo.

Borsanyi took a few games to find her groove before zipping past Ina Durcakova 6-2, 6-0.

It was pretty hard in the beginning, but then I found my rhythm and everything just got so much easier, Borsanyi said. My grounders were better and my first serve was improved and confidence started to build.

Alexander worked past the intense heat and earned a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2 win against Maria Melihova shortly after Revzina posted her 6-0, 6-2 victory over Victoria Krook.

In doubles, the Gator teams of Alexander & Frangulyan and Benik and Revzina captured wins for the second consecutive day.

Alexander and Frangulyan topped FIUs Priscilla Castillo and Maria Dolores Pazo, 8-6, while Benik and Revzina raced past Marijana Cutuk and Maria Jose Vallasciani, 8-2.

Anastasia and I work really well together on the doubles court, Benik shared. With her big hitting and my crossing, were going to be a tough team to beat if we play well. I think were a perfect pairing.
