Will honored by SEC as women’s tennis player of the week
The University of Florida’s Allie Will has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The Gator sophomore capped the regular season with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory against South Carolina’s 29th-ranked Anya Morgina and won her 75th career singles match, as she improved to 75-8 during her collegiate tenure.
On the doubles court, Will paired with freshman Alex Cercone and the team clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win against 32nd-ranked Morgina and Dominika Kanakova won its sixth match in eight outings against a nationally-ranked opponent. The tandem of Cercone and Will is 8-0 this year, all coming in dual match action.
Will is 9-0 on the singles court this year in SEC dual matches, while posting an 8-0 record in league doubles play.
She has played the No. 1 singles position in 16 overall dual matches and is 15-1 at the top spot in those contests, including a 6-0 record versus SEC opponents. Will also has played the No. 1 doubles position in seven of eight SEC matches that completed, compiling an 8-0 record overall with a seven of those victories coming on court one.
Florida (22-1, 11-0 SEC) won the SEC regular-season championship, earned the No. 1 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament and received a first-round bye. The Gators will play the winner of the match between South Carolina and Ole Miss on Friday at Noon in the quarterfinals in Knoxville, Tenn.
