Men’s tennis wraps up NCAA play

 |  May 26, 2007

Athens, Ga. - The run for University of Florida freshman Jesse Levine and junior Greg Ouellette came to a close in the NCAA singles and doubles draws at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday as Levine suffered the first loss of his collegiate career and the two were stopped in doubles play.

Levine, who advanced farther than any other freshman in the nation on the singles courts, was defeated by Washington’s 64th-ranked Alex Slovic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Levine finished the year with a 24-1 record (21-0 in dual match play). Levine’s winning percentage (.960) ranks as the fourth best in a single season in school history and the top mark for any Gator since 1976 when Kevin Cook finished 20-0.

Levine is one of seven Gators ever to go through a season with one loss or less joining Cook and the following players: Jim Oescher, 27-0, 1975; Armistead Neely, 24-0, 1968; Greg Hillley, 23-1, 1968; Jamie Pressly,
22-1, 1967; Art Surloff, 22-1, 1960.

Levine and Ouellette dropped a three set decision in doubles to Middle Tennessee State’s sixth-ranked Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom. The first set fell into a tiebreaker where the Gators edged the MTSU tandem,
7-6 (4). In the second set, each team held serve through the first eight games before MTSU broke the Gators serve in the ninth game and held to win 6-4. MTSU took control and claimed the third set, 6-2. Levine and Ouellette finished the year with a 20-3 overall mark
