Holloway chosen to lead Team USA
Four-time USTFCCCA Men’s Coach of the Year Mike Holloway has been named the head men’s coach for Team USA for the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, August 10-18, 2013, USA Track & Field announced Thursday.
Team USA recorded its second-highest medal total in 2011 at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, racking up 25 medals. The U.S. maintained its status as the world’s No. 1 track & field team by placing atop the medal count for most medals overall and most golds with 12.
Holloway was a member of the Team USA staff at the 2012 Olympic Games, working as the sprints and hurdles coach in London. Holloway’s protégées Tony McQuay and Jeff Demps, both multi-time individual NCAA Champions while at Florida, captured silver medals while at the Games.
Holloway has been instrumental in the rise of the Florida track & field and cross country programs, winning four NCAA men’s titles in the last three years, including three consecutive NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Gator women have captured two SEC Indoor Championships in the last three years and seven conference indoor titles overall. Florida’s women’s cross country team has won three SEC titles in the last four years.
Holloway is no stranger to Team USA, having served as the head coach for Team USA at the 2004 NACAC U-23 Championships and was an assistant coach for the United States at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships.
Holloway has coached athletes to nearly 500 All-America honors and more than 30 individual NCAA titles. He has coached five athletes to a total of 13 Olympic or World Championship medals, seven of which were gold.
Next on the horizon for Holloway, however, are the 2013 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Gator women are the reigning title-holders and have captured two titles in three years. The Florida men are looking for their first conference title since 2011.
