Gray Horn sets school record opening-day decathlon score
AZUSA, Calif. — Junior Florida multi-event athlete Gray Horn (Waynesfield, Ohio) broke his own school-record first-day decathlon score, totaling 4,080 points, and currently stands in third place overall after the opening five events of the Mt. Sac Relays hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif.
Horn broke his own school-record first-day decathlon score of 4,068, set at the 2010 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Horn currently is in third place behind Eric Broadbent of HPC Elite and David Kletch of Oregon. Lars Rise of Missouri, the 2010 Mt. Sac Relays decathlon champion, is in fourth place.
The final five events of the Mt. Sac Relays Multi Events begin at 3:30 p.m. ET Thursday.
Horn opened the day with a time of 10.83 in the 100-meter dash, which was the second-best decathlon 100m time of his collegiate career. He followed that up with a leap of 7.54m/24-9 in the long jump.
Horn then turned in a personal-best mark of more than a foot in the shot put, charting a toss of 12.92m/42-4.75. That bettered his previous personal-best mark of 12.58m/41-3.25. He then cleared 1.94m/6-4.25.
Horn closed out the day by breaking the 50-second barrier in the 400-meter dash for the first time in his career. He clocked a time of 49.79 to better his previous personal-best of 50.23, set at the 2009 SEC Outdoor Championships.
