Gators advance to Sweet 16
The No. 14 Florida Gators volleyball team (27-4, 19-1 SEC) swept College of Charleston (27-8, 14-2 SoCon) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center Saturday evening. This puts the Gators in the Sweet 16 to face No. 3 Texas whom they were swept by earlier in the season (27-29, 22-25, 24-26). Florida’s sweep over the Cougars (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) marks their 21st appearance in the Sweet 16 out of 22 seasons under coach Wise.
The Gators will face the Longhorns (25-4, 15-1 in Big 12 action) at the University of Texas in Austin at 8 p.m. on Friay in the Gregory Gymnasium. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight against either No. 6 seed USC or Wichita State at 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 8.
“Luckily, we’ve had the opportunity to play Texas earlier in the season back in August, early September,” senior right-side hitter Tangerine Wiggs said. “However, both of us have changed very much. Texas has improved in many ways as have we. It’s something we know is an advantage having seen each other play, but at the same time, we just use that as information to propel ourselves forward and take into account some things we’ve seen Texas do when we played them.”
