UF freshman middle distance runner Matt Mizereck lead the charge for the Gators track and field team winning two of the Gators’ five victories this weekend at the UCF Invitational track meet in Orlando.

In his first collegiate track and field competition Mizereck, a Tallahassee native, finished first in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:52.93, before also claiming the men’s 800-meter run in a time of 1:51.88.  Sean Obinwa (Tampa) and Luc Lawrence (Fort Walton Beach) took second and third to complete the Gator 1-2-3 sweep in the 800.

Also making headlines this weekend was sophomore thrower Jeremy Postin, from Auburndale, who shattered his own school record in the men’s hammer throw Friday. Postin won the hammer throw event with a 212-foot throw blew past his previous UF school record of 198 feet.

“It was an unbelievable performance by Jeremy Postin today, breaking theschool record by over 14 feet in the men’s hammer throw,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. Postin is the first student-athlete to throw over 200 feet in UF history.

The indoor track and field champion men proved worthy of their USTFCCCA #1 ranking with a two more first-place finishes.  Sophomore thrower Zane Breakiron (Uniontown, Pa.) won the men’s javelin event along with pole vaulter Eric Foran (Fort Lauderdale) winning the men’s pole vault.

The women’s best results were a pair of second place finishes by discus thrower Keely Medeiros and shot putter Fidela James.  Two Gator women also took third in their events.  Ashley Miller finished right behind Medeiros in the shot put, and Alexis Muniz took third with her 5-foot-4 jump in the women’s high jump.

The meet served as the outdoor season opener for much of the Florida track and field squad.  The Gators used this meet as a tune-up in preparation for next weekends’ Pepsi Florida Relays at the Univ of Fla.

The Gators return to action next Friday, April 1 at the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.
