Collins and Janowicz advance

LOS ANGELES – The University of Florida’s Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) both won two matches on the opening day of action at the prequalifying singles draw of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Collins began her tournament experience with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 87 Simona Parajova of TCU in the first round before knocking off Virginia’s 6-2, 6-4. Collins plays Texas’ Elizabeth Begley on Sunday at Noon ET/9 a.m. PT to advance to the 64-player qualifying draw that will be played Oct. 2-3 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Janocwicz posted equally stellar results with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Penn State’s Chelsea Utting and a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Oregon’s No. 92-ranked Julia Metzger. The Gator junior faces Iowa’s Ruth Seaborne on Sunday at Noon ET/9 a.m. PT.

Gators Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) each earned an automatic spot in the qualifying singles draw, with Cercone and Oyen also competing in the doubles draw.

Senior All-American Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) begins action in the main draw, held Oct. 4-7 at the Riviera Tennis Club, where she will play singles and doubles, partnering with Collins.
