‘Bama mercy rules Florida softball

 |  May 5, 2012  |  0 Comments
Florida's Ensley Gammel, pictured here during an at-bat at Georgia, threw a runner out at the plate for one of the Gators' few bright moments in a 9-1 loss at Alabama on Saturday.

A Florida win Saturday would have solidified at least a share of the Southeastern Conference regular season title, but Alabama’s bats came alive instead.

The No. 6 Florida Gators (44-9, 21-6 SEC) were defeated by No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide (46-6, 21-6) 9-1 in six innings due to the NCAA’s mercy rule in front of 3,640 fans at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday.

With the loss, Florida can no longer win the SEC outright. If Florida wins on Sunday they can clinch a share of the SEC with Alabama and Tennessee.
