Florida Gators softball preview for Judi Garman Classic

The No. 3 ranked Florida Gators softball team went undefeated in the Citrus Classic last weekend in Orlando, Florida despite an extra inning game.

The Gators take their 15-1 record into another weekend tournament this time it’s the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California where the Gators will be tested.

This weekend the Gators will play five games in three days against five different teams in California. The Gators will start play on Thursday before finishing on Saturday afternoon.

Florida will be facing these teams this weekend in Fullerton, California. Iowa, Long Beach State, California, UCLA and Northwestern.

Here’s the schedule for this weekend’s game.

  • #3 Florida vs. Iowa on Thursday at 3:00 P.M
  • #3 Florida vs. Long Beach State on Thursday at 8:30 P.M
  • #3 Florida vs. #23 California on Friday at 5:30 P.M
  • #3 Florida vs. #7 UCLA on Friday at 10:30 P.M
  • #3 Florida vs. Northwestern on Saturday at 3:00 P.M.

That’s a look at this weekend’s games, but let’s dig a little deeper into this weekend’s opponents in our scouting report. Here’s a quick scouting report on the Florida Gators softball team as well.

 

Scouting the Florida Gators:

The Gators are continuing to struggle at the plate but the pitching is carrying the Gators thus far this season.

At the plate Amanda Lorenz and Kayli Kvistad have reached base in all 16 games this year for the Gators.

Kvistad is leading the Gators with a .633 on base percentage and has drive 12 runs while walking 18 times. Sophia Reynoso is leading the Gators with a .476 batting average and is second on the team with 14 RBI’s on the year.

In the circle the Gators have a team ERA of 0.58 on the year and Kelly Barnhill is pacing them. Barnhill has a 0.19 ERA this year and has struck out 76 hitters in 37.2 innings pitched.

Scouting the Iowa Hawkeyes:

Iowa enters the weekend with a 2-7 record and on a seven games losing streak after starting the year 2-0.

At the plate Kaitlyn Mllarkey leads the Hawkeyes with six RBI’s and a .333 batting average this year.

In the circle Allison Doocy is off too 1 -1 start and struck out a career-high seven in just four innings against Texas Tech earlier this year.

Florida leads the all-time series 4-1 against Iowa

Scouting the Long Beach State:

Long Beach State enters this weekend with a 5-6-1 record and just 1-3 in neutral site games.

At the plate Aniesa Maulupe leads the team with a .333 batting average and has 10 RBI’s on the year. Maulupe has a triple and a home run at the plate as well.

In the circle Christina Clermont leads the team with a 2.46 ERA in seven starts. Clermont is 4-1 with three complete games and has struck out 21 batters.

Florida leads the all-time series 3-1 against Long Beach State.

Scouting the Cal Bears:

Cal enters the tournament with a 12-1 record and on a nine game winning streak this this year.

Lindsay Rood is leading the Bears at the plate with a .417 batting average this year. Rood has three doubles and has scored 17 runs this year.

One interesting note on Cal is that they have not hit a home run this year in 13 games.

In the circle Katie Sutherland-Finch leads Cal with 0.00 ERA and is 4-0 in four games. Zoe Conley has started nine games this year and is 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA on the year.

Florida leads the all-time series against Cal 7-3.

Scouting the UCLA Bruins:

The Bruins enter this weekend with a 13-3 record but are coming off of a loss to Florida State last weekend in a 2-1 game.

Kylee Perez leads the Bruins at the plate with a .473 batting average and has scored 13 runs while driving in 12.

Delaney Spaulding leads UCLA with four home runs on the year and is batting .451 with 10 RBI’s.

In the circle Rachel Garcia has a 1.66 ERA and is 6-3 in four starts this year. Johanna Grauer has started six games this year and is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA on the year. UCLA has started four pitchers this year.

Florida leads the all-time series against UCLA 5-4 .

 

Scouting the Northwestern Wildcats:

Northwestern enters this weekend with a 3-10 record on the year and are 3-7 in neutral site games.

Kenzie Ellis is the Wildcats top hitter with a .351 batting average and a home run this year. Morgan Nelson is Northwestern’s leader with two home runs on the year and 12 RBI’s.

Kenzi Ellis is also the Wildcats leading pitcher as she has a 2.26 ERA in nine appearances this year. Nicole Bond has started the most games for Northwestern this year and has a 2.58 ERA and a 1-2 record.

Florida leads Northwestern 3-2 in the all-time series against the Wildcats
