Other than quarterback, perhaps no position benefits from experience quite like the offensive line, which bodes well for the Florida Gators in 2010. The Gators return four starters from the line that helped the Gators lead the Southeastern Conference in total offense last season (ranked sixth nationally) and two other players with starting experience. It’s not just about experience, either. From top to bottom of the roster, this might be the most talented group of linemen in the Urban Meyer era at the University of Florida.

The Florida Gators have the quarterback who can make every throw in the book in fourth-year junior John Brantley, which is why the offense will be tweaked to fit his skills in the spring. Florida returns a collective 89 catches, 1,273 yards and 13 touchdowns to the receiver position this spring but not one of the group of 13 wide receivers and tight ends has ever been the go-to guy at the college level. Finding some guys Brantley can trust will be one of the major tasks of the spring.

Urban Meyer has always insisted that his spread option offense evolves to fit the personnel rather than the other way around. What the Gators ran for two years with Chris Leak as the trigger man bore little resemblance to the offense of the past three years that Tim Tebow ran. When spring football practice begins in eight more days, Florida fans will get a chance to watch the latest evolution in the Meyer offense as John Brantley finally gets his chance to show what he can do.

There will likely be no victory laps by the quarterback this season. It’s not likely he’ll be trying to run over linebackers and defensive backs. He’ll be taking most of his snaps under center and not out of the shotgun. But don’t think for a moment that because Tim Tebow is gone that there will be a drop-off at the quarterback position.

Probably the biggest advantage to being the only Pouncey on campus is people finally know Mike Pouncey’s name. With twin brother Maurkice off to the NFL, nobody on campus or even the Florida football team has to endure those awkward moments when they’re trying to figure out which twin is which. Instead of hearing “Hey Twin!” or simply “Pouncey” people finally know he’s Mike.

In some respects, it was the punctuation mark that said the most turbulent two months in the Urban Meyer era at the University of Florida is over and it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. D.J. Durkin, Stan Drayton and Teryl Austin were introduced at a Wednesday afternoon press conference at the F Club in the north end zone at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, adding voices and physical confirmation that business is back to normal with the Florida football program.
