Wesley Green grew up a Gators fan

 |  March 12, 2012  |  0 Comments

Growing up in Fort Lauderdale made Lithonia, Ga., cornerback Wesley Green’s first offer extra special.

“My first offer was from Florida and it felt great,” Green said. “I’m from Florida, so I grew up watching the Gators play and rooting for them — so for them to be my first offer was awesome.”

The 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. High prospect now has five scholarship offers, and an early favorite among those schools.

“So far Florida, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Georgia and South Carolina have all offered me,” Green said. “Florida is definitely my early on leader because I’m from there and rooted for them.”

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Green has already began building a relationship with one of Florida’s assistant coaches.

“Me and coach (Derek) Lewis talk a lot — he was the one to offer me a scholarship,” Green said. “I really like him a lot. He is straight forward and has been honest with me from Day 1. When he first talked to me, he told me he was going to review my film and let me know how he liked it and then he called my coach and told me he was offering me a scholarship.

“He always tells me how much he wants me to be at Florida and how they can prepare me for the next level.”

Green made his first trip to Gainesville last month for a junior day event and came away impressed.

“I loved every bit of it — the campus was great,” Green said. “I really liked the academic things at Florida and how they tell you that you will be a student first and an athlete second — that stood out. Also, I got to go into the Swamp and it was unbelievable when I walked in, all this energy just rushed me. It was great.”

Martin Luther King Jr. has been a popular recruiting stop for Florida in recent history as the Lions have a number of top prospects, including one of the Gators’ main targets this year in offensive lineman Josh Outlaw.

“Florida likes to recruit my school,” Green said. “Me and Josh talk all the time about how awesome it would be to play together and everything we are just taking everything in right now though.”

Green reports a laser-timed 40-yard dash of 4.7 seconds and a hand-timed 40 of 4.5 seconds.
