Swamp overwhelms Davon Johnson

 |  September 16, 2007

It is always good for recruiting when you schedule a big recruiting weekend and the home team delivers a crushing blow to a national power. The Florida Gators had a huge list of top prospects in for the weekend and their dismantling of Tennessee was fun to watch for big time players like wide receiver Davon Johnson (6-0, 170) of Miami (FL) Booker T. Washington. Johnson had nothing but great things to say about his visit and he is having to reevaluate his stance as a commitment to the University of Miami.

The Swamp was a little more than he and his parents bargained for.  He hadn’t been in an atmosphere quite like it.

“Everything I saw was great, the offense was great and the atmosphere was great,” Johnson said. “Just imagine 90,000 plus fans screaming in your ear, words cannot describe how loud that is.”

Johnson came with his mother and step-father (dad) who is Gator Great Ben Hanks of the early nineties gator teams. It caused a little refocusing on his recruitment.

“I came up with my mom and my dad,” Johnson said. “My dad is a Gator and loved it and my mom was just blown away.  She just loved the college atmosphere and didn’t know what to expect. Coach Meyer is a cool, nice guy, and my parents just loved him. It made me take a big step back and look more into Florida. I just liked how it felt and how the whole team likes each other.  Right now I am still a Cane, but I might come back up to Florida for another game, maybe Auburn in two weeks.”

Johnson is currently second in Dade County in receptions and yardage and that is with two bye weeks. His abilities on the field would translate well to the Florida offense, if he decides to change his mind about where he wants to go to college.  He loves the dual threat abilities of the receiving corps.

“When I was growing up I was supposed to be a running back, when I was little that is all I played so I have those skills in me,” he said. “My best time in the 40 is a 4.38.  they really like my speed and raw talent and what I do. They love my natural way that I adjust to the ball. I love the offense that Florida ran on Saturday.”

If anyone wanted a glowing recommendation on where to take a visit, the Gators might want to ask Johnson to give one for them.

“There are too many things to point to one thing that stood out over the weekend,” he said.

Time will tell what this means as far as his commitment to0 Miami or Florida.
