Shaw’s nervousness replaced by expectation

 |  August 24, 2007

When football practice began for Greg Shaw's senior season at Monsignor Pace High School in the Miami suburb of Opa-Locka, the big offensive lineman was a feeling nervous. New coaches will do that to you and Shaw wasn't sure how things were going to work out with Coach Alvin Slaughter.

“I thought it would be hard, but everyone kept telling me that you are going to have to switch coaches when you go to college anyway so you better get use to it,” Shaw said.

Now with the start of the season just days away, Shaw’s worries have disappeared, replaced instead by high expectations.

“Everything is going great,” he said. “Coach Slaughter is very nice and he has us all working hard. I think we could go undefeated this year.”

In addition, to adjusting to a new coach, Shaw is also focusing on where he will go to college.

“I am still at eight schools and I probably won’t narrow my list down until sometime during the season,” he said.

Shaw identified Florida, Louisville, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Georgia, LSU, USF and Wake Forest as the schools that have his interest. However, there are three schools that have definitely earned an official visit.

“I am definitely going to visit Florida, but I am just not sure when,” Shaw said. “Also, I know I am going to visit Wisconsin and Georgia Tech.”

Shaw said those three schools are the ones recruiting him the hardest right now and why each one has secured an official visit.

FLORlDA: “Oh my gosh, what a great program. I love the coaches. I talked to Coach Meyer a couple months ago and he is such a great guy. I love the program and also it seems like you will always have competition for starting spots and I like that.”

GEORGIA TECH: “I love the coaches and the education is great. The location is great as well.”

WISCONSIN: “They are just a powerhouse and I love that. It seems like they are always going to be ranked high. The coaches are really down to earth.”

Even though he has already decided he will definitely visit those three schools, Shaw wouldn’t say that he likes them more then the other five schools.

“I am not going to say they are my top three because then I would be lying,” he said.

There are two main factors that Shaw will consider when deciding his future home.

“I want great coaches and a great education,” he said. “I plan to major in either business, finance or psychology.”
