Scott to Bama but still taking trips

 |  July 30, 2007

B.J. Scott (5-11, 189) of Prichard (AL) Vigor surprised a lot of people in the Sunshine State when he committed to the University of Alabama on Monday. Scott could play on either side of the ball at the next level but he decided he wants to be an offensive star for Alabama. Even so, he's going to be taking some official visits to other schools.

Just a week or so ago Scott was favoring the University of Florida but things changed when he made an unofficial visit for a camp in Tuscaloosa this week.

“It wasn’t really about what I liked, just about the best decision for me,” Scott said. “Florida was my favorite --- you grow up liking teams --- but when you go to make a decision that will impact your life, you have to make the best decision for yourself.

“At Alabama they want me to play receiver. They want to put me in like David Palmer so I can play like him. I just couldn’t turn that down. I could have gone to Auburn and started as a corner, but they want me on defense and I didn’t want to play defense. I want the ball on offense.

“Florida has to get Percy his touches and I may be in his shadow or something like that. I know I wouldn’t start and I have a little more pride than that.”

Scott had a chance to visit both Florida and Alabama in the last week or so getting a feel for both before making the decision. He still plans on checking out some schools nationally.

“I plan on taking my trips,” he said. “I will trip to USC, Miami, Florida, Alabama, and Auburn. I was at Friday Night Lights and had a good time. I was also at the Bama camp for one day. It was different from Florida’s camp. The Florida camp was high profile and short. Alabama’s was high profile and full length. I participated on the first day and it was kind of like two-a-days and the Florida camp was kind of like tryouts or something like that.”

It may not be a shocker that Burton “B.J.” Scott committed to Alabama, but it came as a surprise this early in the process after favoring Florida. It is a long haul to signing day and with five scheduled visits, four other schools will get their shot at him once again.
