Safety Marcus Maye commits to Gators

 |  July 18, 2011  |  6 Comments
Melbourne safety Marcus Maye committed to Florida on Monday, becoming the 15th member of the Florida football recruiting class for 2012.

On Friday, Florida landed a commitment from four-star safety Rhaheim Ledbetter from Crest High School in Shelby, N.C., and on Monday it landed another.

The Gators secured commitment No. 15 when four-star safety Marcus Maye verbally committed to Florida over Alabama and Florida State.

For the 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety from Melbourne, the decision to choose a school was a tough one.

“It feels great, I’m excited about committing to Florida,” Maye said. “It’s been a hard and confusing road, but now that it’s done I feel like there is no more weight on my shoulders and everything is fine now. Everything is good.”

Though the process was tough, one school in particular has always stood out to him, he said.

“I’ve pretty much known for a good while about how I felt about Florida,” Maye said. “I felt comfortable here. With coach (Will) Muschamp and coach (Travaris) Robinson, Florida has a great coaching staff. Just being up here a lot and being comfortable here made it an easy decision for me.”

Maye said Ledbetter has already tried to reach out to him, and the two are excited about playing together.

“Rhaheim tried to call me this weekend but we haven’t been able to catch up yet,” Maye said. “I will call him when I leave Gainesville. I’m excited about him at strong safety and Brian Poole at corner. I’m still working on Tracy Howard, if we could get him that would make it even better.”

Florida now has 15 commitments with just more than six months left until signing day. Maye thinks this will be one of the top recruiting classes in the country.

“I just feel like this is the place to be,” he said. “I’m excited about Florida’s future with all the great players coming in.”

Maye recently participated in “The Opening,” a combine put on by Nike up in Beaverton, Ore. One of his teammates during the combine was Tampa standout athlete Nelson Agholor.

Maye said the two players have been friends for a while and Maye has been in Agholor’s ear about attending the same school.

“There is definitely a chance with Nelson,” he said. “I’ve known him since I was little and we played on the same team up in Oregon. We’ve been talking a lot about Florida. I told him that’s where I was leaning to and if he jumped on board, Florida could have one of the top recruiting classes in the country.”

Agholor will be attending Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp this week. Maye, however, will be participating in an AAU tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., and will not be able to attend.

Maye chose Florida over Alabama and FSU, so is he planning on taking anymore visits in the fall?

“No sir not at all, I’m all Gator,” he said. “I’ve made up my mind.”

Maye said he is uncertain if he will enroll early at Florida.
