RECRUITING: Wright’s Heart Is In Gainesville

 |  February 2, 2007

The Florida Gators understand the importance of recruiting talent-rich South Florida and they've landed two of Broward County's best in running back Bo Williams and one of their most recent commitments, safety Major Wright of Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Williams is already in school and Wright says Gainesville is where his heart is.

Wright is a US Army All-American and five-star safety on Scout.com. Known as a head hunter because he has a knack for delivering the big hit in the middle of the field, Wright plays with a nasty attitude. In San Antonio at The US Army All-American Bowl, Wright was particularly impressive. He’s a sure tackler and has a very high football IQ.

Just a week after the US Army game, Wright visited the University of Florida campus for the National Championship celebration. Watching Florida beat Ohio State on television “had a little impression” on him but it was the celebration weekend in Gainesville that sealed it for the All-American.

“When I went (to Florida) I felt it in my heart that this was the place I should be,” he said. “It was a great coaching staff, great environment, great academics, so I just went with my heart.”

One of Wright’s friends on the recruiting trail was fellow Gator commitment and Army All-American Lorenzo Edwards, another hard hitter with a nasty attitude that will be teaming with Wright to neutralize Gator opponents in the foreseeable future. They will join Gator linebacker Brandon Spikes who hosted Wright on his visit two weeks ago.

“Lorenzo and I keep in contact … I call him and he calls me,” Wright said. “Spikes is a great guy. I know as a teammate he is going to make me better. I could be on the field with him and off the field with him.”

Wright has a love for the game that also makes him a talker and a big time hitter on the field. That is what Gator fans and coaches expect to see when he dons the orange and blue next season.

“I will play my heart out, just go out there and do what I can do,” he said. “[The coaches] expect me to be Major. They want me to come down and play like a Gator.”
