RECRUITING: Peters Big Time On/Off The Field

 |  September 22, 2006

Jason Peters is not your typical high school football player. He has All-American ability on the football field, but he is also one of the best students in America even though athletics takes up so much of his time. This is one young man that is truly doing his research because he does want the best of athletics and academics.

From Baton Rouge (LA) Catholic, Peters is a versatile student athlete on and off the field. He’s 6-3 and 255 pounds, a stalwart in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

“I play mainly on defense and a little offense at tight end and I go in on goal line situations,” he said.

When it comes to school work, he’s a stalwart in the classroom.

“School is going well and I am taking a standard load right now,” he said. “I am taking physics, advanced math and that kind of stuff.”

He has a list of favorite schools that he believes combine the best in academics and athletics.

“I am interested in everyone right now, but I have a top seven of LSU, Georgia Tech, Florida, Auburn, Stanford, Northwestern, and Nebraska,” he said. “All seven have offered.”

Peters had a bit to say about every one of the schools and it is easy to see his quest for a good education.

LSU: “The environment is tremendous. The help they give the student athletes. The study centers and the time and money they have committed to athletes to study. They want to make sure that their players excel on the field as well as in school.”

GEORGIA TECH: “The program in general is great and they have so much to offer at the school.”

FLORIDA: “Right now it’s the playing style. I am going to take a visit there at the end of the season. I want to see it and get a better feel for the school itself.”

AUBURN: “I like their pharmacy program and I like the way their program is run.”

STANFORD: “They have high academics there and a good football team.”

NORTHWESTERN: “They have an Ivy League education and one of the best football schools in the conference.”

NEBRASKA: “They have one of their best academic schools in the conference and I like what they offer from their football team.”

Peters plans on making five visits to check out schools, but the list of five at the moment is a little flexible.

“It is a rough list at this time, but they will possibly be Florida, LSU, Georgia Tech Stanford, and Nebraska,” he said. “Those are possibilities with nothing certain.”

Peters has a short list of what he expects from the schools recruiting him and what it might take to get him to sign the dotted line in February.

“I want to see how I will fit into the school.” He said. “I want to see how the school is doing. I want to know what they are going to with the program and how I will fit in academically.”

The Florida Gators are looking to sign several defensive linemen in the class of 2007. Jason Peters is a one for Gator recruitniks to keep an eye on this recruiting season.
