RECRUITING: Did Gators move up with Woodny?

 |  October 3, 2006

The Florida Gators will be losing three senior cornerbacks after the season and replacing them is of paramount concern. College of Sequoias cornerback Woodny Turenne is rated the number one junior college player at the position and the Gators hosted him this weekend for a visit. Florida put on an outstanding defensive performance against Alabama and Turenne liked what he saw.

Turenne saw first hand the pressure the Gators could put on a team and saw the secondary get three interceptions on the day. Turenne liked the play of the defense and the crowd at the Swamp.

“It was a loud crowd and I really liked the game,” Turenne said. “I could picture myself playing in that defense. They are tough, they have good safeties and their corners are good also.

He came away from the game with a clear leader.

“Florida is on top right now.”

The 6-1, 185 pound speedster showed up Friday night for his official visit and had a good time overall.

“It was a really good trip. I arrived at 9 pm Friday night. I talked to a couple of coaches and hung out with a few players that night. “

With the Gators the leader, Turenne isn’t quite sure if and when he will visit other schools. He will sit down with his coach in the next couple of days and try and figure that out. When he is done with the visits, he will be ready to make a decision.

“I have to get with my Coach and see about visiting any other schools, but I don’t know where,” Turenne said, “I will probably make a final decision after my visits are done.”

He knows what he is looking for in a school and the Gators seem to really fit the mold.

“I want to go somewhere that has a great defense,” he said. “I will look at the depth chart and see just how well I fit in at a school.”

He only has one interception on the season and it was actually called back. There is no doubt that opponents are throwing away from Turenne with his skills. The Gators would like to see those skills lined up in their secondary next season. We will be keeping in touch with Turenne throughout the process.
