RECRUITING: 3 More Visits For Edwards

 |  October 24, 2006

One of the top defensive players in the nation, Orlando Edgewater's Lorenzo Edwards has been recruited by many of the top level programs in the nation. Clocked at 4.72 in his 40-yard sprint, Edwards has the look of a weak side linebacker although he has his sights set on playing safety in college.

Edwards is currently doing his part to lead the Edgewater football team to a very successful season.

“We’re 6-1 right now,” he said. “Our one loss was to a tough Apopka team, and our special teams were a little off. Collectively, we played well as a team.”

Rated at 4-stars and the number one weak side linebacker prospect in the nation by Scout.com, Edwards is 6-2, 221. His combination of speed, size and athleticism is the reason all the top schools in the country have made their sales pitch. That athletic ability translates to both sides of the ball.

“I’ve been playing both ways,” he said. “I play safety on defense and wide receiver on offense. I’ve scored a touchdown in every game this year.”

Edwards lists a top five of Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. He also says that all five are looking at him to play safety.

FLORIDA: “They’re a great school. I want to major in architecture and they have a really good program for it. I’ve also thought about majoring in sports psychology, and Coach (Urban) Meyer told me they have a good program for both of them. I will be visiting them in November so hopefully I can learn more about the program and academics.”

“Coach (Charlie) Strong has been recruiting me and we text a lot. He likes how aggressive I play. He says he wants me to play safety for their defense.”

NOTRE DAME: “It’s a great school with a great football and academic tradition. Their main priority is education. I can tell the staff is very sincere with everything they’ve told me. I’ve had a great connection with all the coaches and players that I’ve met from there.”

MICHIGAN: “It’s got a great program for architecture as well. The players I’ve met are all great and are all a lot like me. That’s the kind of environment I want to surround myself with.”

Edwards has visited both Michigan (October 7th vs. Michigan State) and Notre Dame (September 16th vs. Michigan), and claims that he wants to see the other three of his top five before a decision is made.

“I’ll take three more visits,” he said. “I’ll go to Florida in November and then I want to see Georgia Tech and Clemson too. My decision will come after I take all of my visits.”

Lorenzo Edwards is the type of player any coaching staff would gladly take, and decide where to play him after he is on campus. With his speed, aggressive play, and big hitting ability, he is the type of player any defensive coordinator would salivate over using in his scheme.
