Gator Country

The talent of the wide receiver position Friday night forced some names to go under the radar. One of those names is O’Neil Chambers, who came onto the radar at the Gators’ team camps last month. He garnered praise from the coaching staff all night, and was disappointed when the final whistle blew.

Just finishing their third year of existence as a school, Harmony High School is not very well known to most high school football fans. This year, O’Neil Chambers plans to put them on the map.

His talent was first realized at the team camps in Gainesville last month. He was able to catch the coaches’ eye and get the invitation back to Friday Night Lights. What he experienced last night did not disappoint.

“It was a good experience,” Chambers said. “I got to talk to the coaches a lot. I did my best out at receiver and thought it was good. Coach Gonzales said I was doing really great and they were going to try and make me a Gator. He told me that Urban loves me.

“I also talked to their offensive coordinator (Dan Mullen) and he told me to keep doing what I was doing and for me to keep watching the Gators.”

The 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver was fairly happy with his showing in the Swamp, but wishes he could have shown his ability against the best the camp had to offer.

“I didn’t do my absolute best, but I did pretty good,” Chambers said. “I was disappointed when the camp was over with, because I wanted to go up against Patrick Johnson or that guy from Pahokee (Janoris Jenkins), but that never got matched up.”

Though the Harmony, Fla. prospect wasn’t able to corral a Florida offer, he did say that the Gator coaches will continue to assess his talent.

“They didn’t officially offer me, but they’re saying they may be before it’s all over,” Chambers said. “They’re just going to keep evaluating me.”

Even though he came away from the camp very impressed with what the Gators offer, they still aren’t on top, with two schools above them who have both offered.

“They’re my third school right now,” Chambers said of the Gators. “I have BYU and Maryland on top right now, but that’s the three schools I’m most interested in.”

Chambers will continue to visit more schools before the fall school year begins. He says that he would like to continue showing his talent to plenty of schools in the Southeast.

“I’m going to one more camp, a senior showcase type thing,” Chambers said. “Then South Carolina, Georgia, and Georgia Tech.”
