Transitive property works for Gators

The Florida Gators were off this week, but one assumes that a few of the Gators’ longtime defensive stalwarts, leaders like Jon Bostic, Matt Elam, Josh Evans and Omar Hunter were all smiling for more reasons than the simple advantage of time off to rest their aching bodies.

Watching the Texas A&M Aggies, who the Gators beat 20-17 in come-from-behind fashion and against whom the Gators did not give up a single fourth quarter point, pound Arkansas 58-10 was television gold. Seeing Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray lead Tennessee to a close but ultimately tough 51-44 loss at Georgia was practically Emmy-winning viewing for defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s heavy hitters.

Why would Florida want to see hated rival Georgia win any game, you ask? Why would the Gators care that the Aggies piled up the points against an Arkansas program that has barely more life to it than a goldfish flushed down the toilet?

In the world of college football, the transitive property is king. Say Team A kills Team B, and then Team B plays a close game against Team C the following week. Team A is thus better or at least comparable to Team C until the two actually meet each other face-to-face.
