‘Tis the season for bowl gifts

Florida’s win against Florida State was worth $12.45 million.

The payout for the Sugar Bowl is $17 million while the Capital One Bowl — where Georgia ended up instead of Florida after the Gators moved ahead of the Bulldogs in the final BCS Standings — is $4.55 million.

Of course, bowl payouts all go into a pool that’s split evenly between teams in each conference and the SEC would have received the Sugar Bowl’s payout regardless of the team that earned the bid. Still, it’s fun to think the Gators beating the snot out of the Seminoles was worth $12.45 million.

Players could care less about the conference payouts. They don’t get a dime of it. However, they are finally getting “pay for play” of sorts as nearly $5 million will be awarded in the form of bowl gifts this season.
