Three Visitors for a Celebration Weekend

 |  January 12, 2007

The Florida Gators will be celebrating their National Championship on Saturday and at the same time try and lure prospects to play for more Championships. Recruiting gets heated up again as the Gators host three all-American candidates. Speed is the theme for the weekend visitors and they had to like what they saw Monday night as team speed was on display when the Gators smashed Ohio State.

With a crowd of over 60,000 fans in Gainesville to celebrate the Gators newest National title, the overall atmosphere for a visit weekend should be tremendous. The Swamp should be close to capacity to greet the team and coaching staff along with highlight films and much more that should leave a very positive experience on the visitors in attendance.

Starting off the visitor list is five-star wide receiver Deonte Thompson of Belle Glade Glades Central. Thompson (6-0, 186) has been a big time recruit for over two years now since he ran a timed 4.28 in the 40 yard dash at the Scout.com combine before his junior year in high school. However, Thompson is much more than a speed merchant and displayed his big time skills in San Antonio at the US Army All-American Bowl and the practices leading up to the game on January 6th. Thompson is looking at Florida, Ohio State, USC, and LSU.

Another south Florida product and Army All-American that is expected in attendance for an official visit this weekend is strong safety Major Wright. The four-star hitter from Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas was also a standout all week for the East squad in San Antonio. Known for his hitting ability, Wright (6-1, 204) showed unknown speed and dexterity during a hard week of practice for the Army Bowl. Wright will choose between Florida, USC, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

The last official visitor for the weekend is super athlete Chris Culliver of Garner (NC). Culliver (6-1, 190) has freakish speed and size and could be a star on either side of the ball. In another all-star game last week, Culliver shined on offense, while the Gators are recruiting the four-star safety as a free safety and replacement for All-American Reggie Nelson who is expected to declare for the NFL draft in the next week. Culliver has his list narrowed to Florida and South Carolina who is recruiting him as a wide receiver.

There will likely be dozens of other top prospects in attendance for the celebration. Three that we know right now are five-star defensive tackle John Brown, three-star safety Steve Wilks, and five-star running back Chris Rainey, all of Lakeland high school.
