Saturday recap: SEC ruins ACC title-game hype

 |  November 28, 2009  |  0 Comments

ATLANTA – Washaun Ealey rushed for 183 yards and Caleb King added 166 more as Georgia rushed for 339 yards to stun No. 7 Georgia Tech, 30-24, Saturday night.

The victory by Georgia (7-5) regained state bragging rights and put a black eye on next Saturday’s ACC Championship Game in Tampa as both Georgia Tech (10-2) and Clemson (8-4) were losers on Saturday to the SEC teams in their home state. South Carolina knocked off Clemson, 34-17.

Georgia jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first half behind the running of Ealey and King, who scored a pair of touchdowns. The Bulldogs’ defense limited the Yellow Jackets to just 205 yards on the ground.

Part of the reason for the lack of production on the ground by Georgia Tech was an ankle injury suffered by quarterback Josh Nesbitt in the first half.

Still, the Yellow Jackets, who had rallied from 16 points down for a 45-42 victory last season in Athens, had a chance to with the game. Head coach Paul Johnson harnessed his triple option and instead took three shots downfield on the arm of Nesbitt. All of the passes were incomplete.

On fourth-and-10, Nesbitt found a wide-open Demarylus Thomas, but the receiver could not hold on to the football.

No. 15 Louisiana State 33, Arkansas 30, OT: At Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday night, Josh Jasper kicked a 41-yard field goal to send the game into overtime and then added a 36-yarder for the winning points for the Tigers (9-3, 5-3 SEC West).

After Jasper’s overtime field goal, Arkansas’ Alex Tejada attempted a 36-yard field goal and missed, ruining what would have been a great comeback by the Razorbacks (7-5, 3-5 SEC West) that was keyed by quarterback Ryan Mallet’s fourth-down touchdown pass to Joe Adams with 1:18 left in regulation. That put Arkansas up 30-27 until Jasper tied the game with time running out in regulation.

LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson threw touchdown passes to Brandon LaFell and DeAngelo Peterson and Trindon Holliday ran back a punt 87 yards for another touchdown.

South Carolina 34, No. 18 Clemson 17: At Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C., Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes and the Gamecocks’ defense slowed Clemson’s C.J. Spiller.

Spiller opened the game with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown – an NCAA-record seventh – but Garcia and the Gamecocks (7-5) quickly took command to end a two-game losing streak in the series.

Clemson (8-4) saw its six-game winning streak snapped because it had just 260 yards of offense. Spiller finished with 18 yards rushing and 19 yards in receptions.

Mississippi State 41, No. 25 Mississippi 27: At Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, backup quarterback Chris Relf accounted for three touchdowns and running back Anthony Dixon set a single-season rushing record as the Bulldogs upset the Rebels in the Egg Bowl.

Davis gained 133 yards and scored a touchdown as he finished the season with 1,390 yards in 11 games, breaking James Johnson’s school record by 7 yards.

The defense made several big plays, including a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown by Corey Broomfield and two interceptions by Charles Mitchell. Mississippi State finished its first season under former Florida Gators offensive coordinator Dan Mullen with a 5-7 record (3-5 SEC West). The loss dropped the Rebels to 8-4 (4-4 SEC West).

Tennessee 30, Kentucky 24, OT: At Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Ky., Montario Hardesty ran for three touchdowns, including a 20-yarder for the game-winning score in overtime, as Tennessee won for the 25th straight time against Kentucky.

Hardesty finished with a career-high 179 yards and his touchdown came after Kentucky’s Lones Seiber missed a 49-yard field goal on his team’s possession. It was a 33-yard field goal by Seiber that sent the game into overtime for Kentucky (7-5, 3-5 SEC East).

Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC East) likely assured itself of a New Year’s Day bowl with the victory.
