S Matt Elam cited for underage drinking

 |  July 24, 2011  |  8 Comments
Sophomore safety Matt Elam was cited for underage drinking Sunday, according to a report in the Gainesville Sun.

Florida sophomore safety Matt Elam was cited for underage drinking Sunday and given a notice to appear in court, the Gainesville Sun reported.

According to the Sun, police officers saw Elam drinking from a plastic cup in downtown Gainesville, and he threw it aside when he saw the officers.

The citation is Elam’s second since arriving at Florida. He was cited for underage drinking on July 2, 2010.

His citation is the fifth run in with the law for a Florida player.

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins was cited for marijuana possession twice, while redshirt freshman Chris Martin and redshirt sophomore Kedric Johnson were each cited for marijuana possession once.

Jenkins left the team in April after meeting with Muschamp, and Martin transferred from the program in June.

It seems like there are players on the team who simply have chemical or substance abuse problems.  Perhaps this is nationwide, but our school is plagued with it.  A greater effort at providing students and not just student athletes with substance abuse counselors is in order.

Drinking in and of itself is not an indication of a problem, but drinking underage and apparently in public and getting caught for the second time is a sign that there could be a dependency problem.

If Elam did not realize that God was trying to tell him something the first time then the fact that he has to deal with the same issue again might be indicative of something that he can’t deal with.

Every college kid drinks...who cares...He was just dumb enough to get caught. Not too worried about it.

The difference: he’s on scholarship! Take him off the scholarship now and let him pay his own way for a year and put him on permanent probation. We’re rebuilding the team so now is the time to cut the problem children and then rebuild from the ground up if necessary. There HAS to be some young men out there who wants to play ball for Florida and capable of playing by the rules!

oh geez...Take a step into reality....kids are going to drink and live the college life. I don’t care if kids are on scholarships or not....it doesn’t matter they are in college. Thats what college kids do. Its just a matter of not getting caught. Was I the only one that played college football and drank underage?

5:00am wake up calls to run stadium steps may do the trick.  Funny how exhaustion from hard work has a way of keeping you home and out of trouble.  Make the whole team run when an underclassman gets caught drinking and suddenly the Seniors will get real serious.

Come on Matt....it is a priviledge to be playing football for a Division 1 school and of all places the University of Florida.  Stop screwing up and don’t throw it all away.  You have all the time in the world when you graduate from the University of Florida and drink whenever you want to when you are making millions of dollars in the NFL.  I know you are better than that and you have a chance to become a leader on this years’ Gator football team.

Being at the wrong place at the wrong time....Haven’t the athletes realized everyone is watching them? Including the Gainesville police who seem to be targeting them.

These are just college students doing what college students do and that is drink occaionally.  It seems to me that the GPD is a little bit out of control.  Do’nt they have better things to do than arrest a kid standing on the corner with a paper cup in his hand?
