UF’s Matt Jones gets his bearings
As far as dealing with the sports media is concerned, it is hard to upstage some of the programs of the SEC. Alabama is coming off a national championship victory, having beaten fellow Southeastern Conference foe LSU to earn the crystal football. Steve Spurrier is the coach of South Carolina, and he is more quotable than Larry the Cable Guy at a pig roast. Georgia’s star running back Isaiah Crowell, was kicked off the team for weapons possession.
However, at SEC Media Days before the 2012 season officially kicked off, Florida Gators senior running back Mike Gillislee did just that. With one sentence he snatched national headlines away from the likes of Nick Saban, Les Miles and the entrance of Texas A&M and Mizzou football programs into the conference.
Just think — all he had to say was that he was going to run for 1,500 yards and punch in 24 touchdowns.
At the time, some folks thought he might be nuts, but as it turned out, Gilly had benefited from three years of waiting and practicing behind all-world speedsters Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps.
Now, it is true freshman Matt Jones’ turn to watch, wait and collect his bearings.
