Less than 24 hours before kicking off the 2012 season, the Florida football team has yet to name a starting quarterback.

Gators sophomores Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Drskel will get a quarter apiece during the first half of Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. game against Bowling Green in The Swamp. At halftime, coaches will decide how reps will be split in the second half.

GatorCountry.com takes a look back at the quarterback battle that has consumed headlines and conversations for months. This timeline goes all the way back on Jan. 11 when Brent Pease was named the Gators new offensive coordinator, but the battle essentially began when the two top-ranked quarterbacks signed with Florida in February of 2011.

While Saturday’s game has been billed as the end of the battle, it may just be the beginning. What happens if both are equally effective in the first half, and then get another quarter each in the second half that produces similar results? The battle will continue, obviously.

It’s important to note that no one has ruled out having a two-quarterback system in place all season. In fact, that possibility has been mentioned early and often during the process. Time will tell. We’ll all have to see how it plays out.
