Everett SEC Player of Week; Bama/UF on CBS

 |  September 18, 2006

Earl Everett was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week and Jemalle Cornelius was named SEC Community Service Team Player of the Week. Also, CBS has picked up the Florida vs. Alabama game which will be televised at 3:30pm.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. * University of Florida senior linebacker Earl Everett (Webster, Fla.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. In addition, senior wide receiver Jemalle Cornelius (Fort Meade, Fla.) has been selected to the SEC Community Service Team.

Everett made a team-high 11 tackles to help the Gators defeat No. 13 Tennessee, 21-20, in Knoxville to open the SEC schedule. Everett and the defense held the Vols to minus 11 rushing yards, the lowest performance in the 168 games Phillip Fulmer has coached at UT and the seventh-lowest allowed by a UF defense in school history. Seven of Everett’s tackles were solo efforts and his 11 in the game were three short of his career high (14, vs. LSU, 2005). The amount increased his career total to 207.

Cornelius is a two-year member of the Gators’ Leadership Committee, which is charged with acting as spokesmen for the team and handling situations related to team policy issues, academic affairs, off-campus circumstances and other topics. He also served as Florida’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative to the 2005 Disney Leadership Committee. In January, he attended the 2006 Knight Commission in Washington, D.C., as Florida’s representative for the convention on several key-note items, such as ethics in recruiting and substance abuse among athletes. Cornelius completed a service internship at Gainesville’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, where he interacted with children on a daily basis and helped facilitate youth programming. He will graduate this December with a degree in Family, Youth and Community Sciences and two minors, one in Non-Profit Organizations and the other in Leadership.
