It was long snapper James Smith who first approached Florida strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti about making his Gator strongman challenge an event open to the entire Gainesville community. At first, Marotti was understandably hesitant to let everybody in to see his team-centered workout that focuses on building team chemistry but after seeing how this could be a useful vehicle to raise money for local charities, Marotti went to the UAA to find a way to get it done. The result was a Friday night event attended by 1,800 people that raised $6,000 for charities.
