After running the penalty count into the double digits in the team’s Week 1 victory against Bowling Green, a conscious effort was made in lowering the Gators’ penalty count to a mere three in the Week 2 comeback victory at Texas A&M. However, the penalty bug came back to bite them hard early against Tennessee.

As the first half whistle sounded on the team's Week Three game against the Volunteers, the Gators had committed six penalties for a debilitating 70 yards. Tennessee had committed six of their own, but only for 39 yards. However, Florida reversed its fortunes in the second half with just one penalty for 18 yards.
