Coaches’ Salaries, Hot Seats: How Muschamp stacks up
With the college football coaching carousel about to begin spinning out of control, it seemed like the right time to take a look at coaches’ salaries from across the country.
Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp is the 12th highest paid coach in the nation, according to the website CoachesHotSeat.com. The second-year coach makes $3.1 million in total compensation annually, which is fifth among SEC coaches. When the UAA released Muschamp's contract information in 2011, it was a five-year deal for $13.7 million for an average of $2.75 million annually. The website's $3.1 million figure is based on total compensation, which includes endorsements (including $200,000 from Nike) and performance bonus incentives.
USA Today compiled a list of coaches' salaries through the 2011 season, and had Muschamp's total compensation listed at $3.22 million, which was ninth nationally on its list. However, that list is outdated as ousted Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino was sixth at $3.635 million, making his motorcycle ride much more expensive than the damage caused to his Harley Davidson.
Regardless, Muschamp may move up the list as at least one coach, Auburn’s Gene Chizik, is one of four SEC coaches who could be on their way out. Chizik makes $3.65 annually, which is third in the SEC and ninth nationally, and is No. 3 on the website’s “Hot Seat Rankings.”
Of course, if one of the four schools signs a coach for more than Muschamp earns, that would change.
