At 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, the Tennessee Volunteers and Florida Gators will meet for the 42nd time. While there were a couple of meaningful games before the 90s the annual match-up became one the country’s best rivalries with the arrival of UF coach Steve Spurrier in 1990 and then the beginning of division play in 1992.
The SEC’s Eastern Division was dominated by the two teams and no other team from the east played in the SEC Championship Game for the first 10 years.
In almost 60 years of SEC play from 1933-1989 the two teams only met 13 times, one of those in a bowl game (1969), a game that saw the Gators win the game and steal the Vols coach.
