After time to ‘decompress,’ Gators go back to work

Earning a bowl bid can work wonders for a college football program. Additional practice time means more time for players, especially underclassmen, to improve basic fundamentals while also honing advanced skills.

The No. 3 Florida Gators play the No. 21 Louisville Cardinals in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which kicks off at 8 p.m. on Jan. 2 in the New Orleans Superdome. By making a bowl, the coaching staff gained 15 more practices to teach players.

Ten of those practices will be in Gainesville while the other five will begin Dec. 27 in New Orleans. Florida coach Will Muschamp said his team “got two good work days in” on Dec. 7-8 and also had a “great night” during a team awards banquet on Dec. 8 with former Gators player Kevin Carter doing “an outstanding job as our keynote speaker.”
