ACK: Third down defense is critical

I know you have heard the phrase that third down is the money down in football. For an offense it can keep a drive alive and moves the chains. Florida was one of the best third down offenses in the country in 2008, finishing in the top ten by converting 51 percent of its third down opportunities. You can point to big drives against Alabama and Oklahoma where Tim Tebow and the Gators delivered on the money down. However, I looked at the last four national champions and was not that impressed with the third down numbers. In fact it was third down defense and fourth down offense that led the last four teams to the top of college football.
