Christmas came early for me this year, arriving at 9 p.m. on December 24 when John Reaves told me that he will wake up Christmas morning clean and sober for the first time in nine years. Christmas is another milestone in his journey back from an indescribable, self-induced hell that ended seven months ago today when he got the courage to admit he was incapable of beating his demons all by himself. He is a Christmas miracle, alive today and able to talk about his return to the living because he had friends who never gave up on him even when he had given up on himself.
