SPRING: Q and A with Matt Patchan

Matt Patchan may not have made his presence felt in a deep offensive line the first day of spring practice, but he showed off his versatility at the end of practice. After the offensive linemen broke away from practice, Patchan went into the pit with defensive line coach Dan McCarney and the linemen. If his blend of speed and physicality doesn’t scare the opposition enough, his hair will do just that.

Q: “How was the first day of practice for you?”

A: “It was good. I had a lot of fun and it’s very exciting. It’s great to be a Florida Gator.”

Q: “You’ve worn orange and green your whole life, how did it feel to put the orange and blue on for the first time?”

A: “It’s great. It’s been very exciting. This team is full of talent. All around it’s exciting to work with some of the better players in the country and get better every day.”

Q: “How do you get used to the speed of this team?”

A: “I’m a speed guy myself who is well suited for the speed defensive end. Playing in Tampa we had some fast guys, so I’ve been able to go up against fast guys since I was a freshman (in high school).”

Q: “What’s your target weight?”

A: “I’ll be about 265 come the season. That way I can put weight on slowly and stay fast and strong. I’m around 255 right now.”

Q: “Are any of the upperclassmen threatening to cut your hair?”

A: “No, not yet. It’ll be a fight. It doesn’t matter who it is, it’s going to be a fight. I don’t even remember.”
