Muschamp provides depth chart clarity

Head coach Will Muschamp met with the media today:

  • Muschamp said they moved the ball well in Friday’s scrimmage but as a group, they didn’t have good sense of urgency.
  • Muschamp said last Saturday’s Fan Day went well, and he remembers when he was a kid coming to fan day and getting autographs from the likes of Wilbur Marshall and David Galloway.
  • Muschamp said Matt Jones is getting blood work done this afternoon, and his weight is back up to 223. Jones weighed in at 226 before coming down with this illness.
  • Muschamp said  they’ll start Toledo-specific work on Thursday and Friday.
  • Muschamp would not guess as to the status of Matt Jones, he gets updates daily.
  • Muschamp said Marcus Maye is starting next to Cody Riggs at safety, Jabari Gorman has played extremely well. Riggs will also play the nickel as well as Brian Poole.
  • Muschamp said at linebacker, Mike Taylor can play the Mike linebacker as well as the Will, which he’ll play in Florida’s nickel and dime packages. Neiron Ball will play the Will in regular packages and Darrin Kitchens would be his backup.
  • Muschamp said Jarrad Davis can play the Will and Alex Anzalone can play the Mike. Daniel McMillan will play the Sam and backup Ronald Powell.
  • Muschamp said at running back: Mack Brown, Mark Herndon and Valdez Showers are the three guys right now.
  • Muschamp said Adam Lane and Kelvin Taylor are so far back in the depth chart because of ball security and pass blocking. He expects both Taylor and Lane to help the team later this season though.
  • Muschamp said that Marqui Hawkins is being slowed by an ankle injury but Alvin Bailey will play some in the slot if he continues to progress.
  • Ahmad Fulwood and Demarcus Robinson are freshmen that have distanced themselves. Gainesville native Chris Thompson will help on special teams, he has a knack for blocking kicks.
  • Muschamp said Loucheiz Purifoy and Solomon Patton are the guys that have been returning kicks and Marcus Roberson is a mainstay returning punts. Purifoy also returns punts.
Richard Johnson
Richard lives in Gainesville and prides himself in being a bonafide lifelong Alachua County Resident. He attends the University of Florida and is in his third year studying Telecommunications. He isn’t sure how he started loving football being the son of two immigrants that don’t care about the sport, but he has developed a borderline unhealthy obsession with it. In his free time, Richard watches other sports and is an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Tampa Bay Rays. He doesn’t like chocolate, knows Moe’s is better than Chipotle and drinks way too many Arnold Palmers. He also took up golf in the summer of 2012. That pursuit isn’t going well.
